Vildhjarta - "Shiver"

The music on this song is fantastic during the first bit. I wish this song was just that first 40 seconds over and over. However, GENRE BAD. And I apologize for the vocals in advance. They made me gag a little because, here on earth, in this reality, in this decade, someone thought those vocals were "cool" enough to record, and cool enough to record like that. Here's hoping the band's full of teenagers who haven't been exposed to anything better.

The good news is, the rest of their songs seem to mostly be just technical metal... so yay for them.

I don't know what the fucking deal is with the numbers, but HOLY something-or-other! LISTEN RIGHT NOW.

BLCKWVS - "0134 E9".

Apparently they're touring in support of 0130 (album name) with Ninth Moon Black here soon. Nice.

PS. Blackwaves.

I was trying to put together a comp of bands that have "evil" songs last year. I didn't finish it, but I kept the rough draft and consequently ended up listening to it many times since... particularly because of this song.

"Evil Is" kind of reminds me of Children and, more loosely, Saviours. Early Man's toured with a bunch of different metal bands ranging from modern thrash to cheesy 80s power metal to stoner metal - from me you'll recognize Red Fang and High on Fire - so I suppose many other comparisons would make sense.

Either way, give that song a listen.

[69] Young Widows, Russian Circles (2009)

[70] Helms Alee, Young Widows, Russian Circles (2009)

Ooh. My first morning-after review. Hey, it actually is(!) a review! ... Not really.

I woke up not feeling as bad as I probably should, having woken up yesterday at 6am, leaving the house for this at 3, and not getting home til 1. I haven't dedicated nearly this much time to a show since the last time I had "concert friends". Not counting traveling to distant cities or sleeping over, possibly never.

The fact that I woke up so fucking early put a damper on this whole experience. I kind of knew I wasn't going to be in the mood for two "identical" shows, that I'd either show up late or leave early... and I ended up leaving early due to the lack of sleep (and too many fucking tall people).

The first show ran from 5:15 to 7 or 7:15. Kind of lame considering the all-ages crowd paid the same price as the 21+ crowd, yet only got 2/3 a show. Granted, there weren't that many people there. Maybe 100 at most. Most of them looked pretty young.

I wasn't exactly sure who was on stage when three boymen stood up there, but I knew it wasn't Helms Alee... since I was pretty sure Helms had ladies in the band. I couldn't decide if it was Git Some or not, since they were originally billed. I thought I'd recognize Young Widows since I've seen them once before... Nope. I guess it's been a while.

So, I liked Young Widows' first set to a point. They were hovering over "meh" most of the time, but the lower end of their sound was pretty good. I'm wondering at this point if I just like bass/bass drums and that's that. Or maybe I don't like guitarists... erm, unless they're fantastic. I don't know. This is an unsolvable riddle until I actually put some real thought into it, which may never happen because I don't really care all that much.

For Russian Circles, I had a good angle to the stage so I could see all that their guitarist was doing... Just like the other two times I've seen them. I don't know what the thing is called, but it's a pedal that records what you've played and plays it back. He loves that thing. And I suppose it saves on having to gain a half-used fourth member to fill in those spots.

Looper. Thanks google. I kept wanting to say repeater because I'm a computer nerd, not a music nerd.

So yeah... They sounded great. Why wouldn't they? Their first set seemed a bit "best of", though they played new songs... I think it was their last song that I didn't necessarily care for, possibly just because I'm not sure I've ever listened to it, but the rest was good. "Geneva" was nice live - the first time I actually had a reason to look over to the bassist.

After that was over, I had almost two hours to kill. I managed to get through the first one with relatively little pain, but the second one was where I started to get very sleepy. I was having trouble through the rest of the night trying to be "awake". I wish they would have started at 8 or 8:30 instead.

By the time music began again, the venue looked like it had been sold out... Possibly even over-sold. Very much in contrast to the early show. The type of people also changed - from apparent "kids" and hipster sorts to the older drunk idiot and aspiring meathead and "I'm here with my boyfriend" crowd. I also noticed a change in how alive/aware and enthusiastic people were. The older crowd seemed less insecure/thoughtful even though the lot of them were just as sterile.

Helms Alee didn't sound as great as I wanted them to. They had some really heavy moments where they all worked together and it was really great... but then they would have lighter moments and each instrument seemed like it was going off in its own direction. At one actually quiet song, it felt like the drums were way overpowering the guitars/vocals, and not in a possibly good way if, say, presented elsewhere. But, again, when they worked together things sounded fine.

Young Widows set two was initially better than the first time around. One or two of their songs had apparently worn off on me in that time. Otherwise... well, okay.

Russian Circles sounded beautiful, but I only stayed for a song and a half (almost 20 minutes) before I decided straining to see with as tired as I was wasn't going to work when I already had a decent fresh memory of them.

Today, I feel shitty as expected, but not nearly as shitty as 8-10 hours of my life would assume. My brain isn't working so great and I'm having trouble with words, but hey... what's new. At least my body feels okay with this abuse.

That said, the concert tickets on my desk have all been cleared away, and I have finals coming up in 2-3 weeks, plus the end of the year lack-of-shows is nigh... so I'm not sure when the 71st show o'mine will be... I have ideas but it's hard to say how realistic they are. Nevertheless, if you don't see one of these for a while, do not fret (insert arrogance over how I think anyone actually reads these things here). They shall resume.

Song: "The Lie That Is Sin"
Artist: YOB
Album: The Great Cessation (2009)

The newest Yob sounds better six months and six days after its initial sting. Possibly due to deprivation, dehydration, and sleep disturbance. I kind of knew I'd like this better when I felt like stabbing a needle in my eye (as opposed to frolicking through a field of daisies).

Holy long-ass intro into the actual "song" bit of this song.

Did you know that Yabby's playing a show January 29th at Rotture with the band Bloody Panda? Now you do. Well, you do as long as the date remains in tact.

Song: "Dulcinea"
Artist: Isis
Album: In The Absence Of Truth (2006)

Annual overdose-on-Isis time again. It must be because they were one of my first artists here. I've been listening to that song a lot. (It could also be because of all of the damn rain and gloominess lately.)

Looking for that post, I discovered that I haven't posted another Isis track since those first ones. What the shit? So here you go.

As much as I pick on Isis and Isis clones, this song is pretty fucking amazing. Definitely a grower, so if you're not a fan of sitting still and listening to a song that's the length of 2-3 average songs, give it some time. The early middle and very end bits will reach your brain at some point.

PS. Tool.

Song: "Polar Bear"
Artist: Puscifer
Album: C is for (insert sophomoric genitalia reference here) (2009)

Puscifer has a new single. It's apparently on the radio. It sounds safe, too. Nice and mellow. Gotta say I like it.

Hey: this album comes out November 10th.

Live album review of Baroness' Blue Record - GO!

1. Yeah whatever.

2. I haven't really understood the Mastodon / Baroness connection. Probably because I started listening to Mastodon around 2006 and didn't pick up Baroness til probably late 2007 after I'd gotten over the majority of the Mastodon infatuation. With at least a year, maybe two year separation between them in my history, to me they seem like separate entities entirely. This song makes that connection make sense, however.

Song's not too bad, might actually be listening to it in the future. Ending - the hell?

3. Crap, I can already tell this one's going to be good, too. ... I like the beat of the song as far as the drums go. Kind of too much to take in at once at times, though. This record's starting to smell like tequila... Wonder if they have the same producer as some other band I know.

4. lol. Not expected. Hm, none of those bands I thought of are related to this one by production. I was actually picturing a venue, and a particular person in relation to the venue is actually related to the producer. Maybe just a weird psychic guess. It does feel sort of like a lot of other bands I've been listening to in recent years with the "moist" bass sound.

Well that ended sort of abrupt.

5. Not sure what to say about this one... Kind of repetitive 'concept' but like an instrumental track, not annoying. Once again seeing the Mastodon relation I wasn't seeing before. Obviously crackey Mastodon.

6. Church music. This is a lot better than Wolfmother, though (duh). What's this pause here? The ambiance. Clearly these guys are "sensitive". I fear Russian Circles is gonna pop out now. Here comes the high plucky guitar! And it's getting louder......

7. Heh, pretty close. ..... The heck is with the psychedelic vibratory guitar all of a sudden? .... and now a fuzzy guitar bit. JIMMAY! This no-guitar piece right here is where he sets his gee-turr on fire. Hm, this isn't epic at all.

8. What do people have against V's. Yuck, I hate when I can hear the strings click and whine back in songs. ...RUN, TO, THE, HILLLLSSS.... No, I guess not. This is getting really annoying. And even more so. Fuck.

9. Okay I'm cool with you guys getting to the point now. Massive jackoffery located in this direction - half price to 15 year old Dream Theater fans!

10. Sounds southern, sort of.

11. (waits) Baroness' "we appeal to girls, too" song per the album, I guess. 2:30 - finally the song changes! OMG WORDS. I thought it was going to be all instrumental. I'm not sure these "hardass" vocals fit this song. And it's over.

12. Last one and only three minutes. Hey, this sounds familiar. Must be a clip out of that other Bullshit song. Sounds like a damn lullaby. No words yet? Nope! None. It's funny that I just listened to this whole thing and I haven't even listened to Mastodon's new one all of the way through yet.

And that's it.

This album smelled like sweet hard liquor something awful. Pretty powerful overall sound, really nice and clear music. Accessible. Not too far down into "fag metal" even when approaching it with a few of these tracks, but still pretty easy on the ears. I can see why it's getting praise.

In conclusion,

October 21, 2009

I am going to cover two birds with one stone here and mini "live" review both Priestess' Prior To The Fire and Wolfmother's Cosmic Egg in the same entry, at the same time.

I have heard "Lady Killer" by Priestess so far and that's it. Everything else is brand new to me.

History: I love/like a few Priestess tracks, and the rest are kind of boring. I initially thought Wolfmother was interesting and their popularity made them quickly not interesting at all, made worse by realizing how fucking annoying they are. I suppose if I were 10 or 15 years old, or still had that mindset, I might like them better. This is probably what we're gonna get from this review, folks.

Priestess - 1. Lady Killer
It took a bit to settle in my mind, but I have decided that I like it. The quick guitar is pretty familiar to every single fucking band in the stoner through thrash genres. Vaguely reminds me of "Christ Hunt" by Saviours, since that's what I've liked a lot of lately.

Priestess - 2. Raccoon Eyes
I don't like that raccoon has two consecutive double letters. And I'm waiting for a beat. I wonder if this guy is popular with the ladies with a voice like that. Yep, no like-ah.

Priestess - 11. Trapped In Space & Time
Already sounds like it's gonna be good, despite being generic. This song is reminding me of recent Black Cobra even though saying that is against my religion. (Oops I accidentally had random on.)

Priestess - 3. The Firebird
heh. Well, I guess it's possible for this guy to sing without being too annoying. What's with the raspiness? Did you smoke before you recorded this? You been hanging out with Buckcherry?

Wolfmother - 1. California Queen
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club x QOTSA =. Oh, there goes the voice. Screeeeech. Hm, the stompy rolling sound is actually nice. What the hell kind of breakdown is this in the front of your album? Am I getting paid for this blog yet? Smells like fog on the horizon.

Wolfmother - 2. New Moon Rising
Irrelevant intro. Now with the non-"voice" voice. Masters of Reality. Who produced this?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Moulder

LOL. He said "wo-mon" again.

Anyway, this is like elevator music for a metal themed department store.

Wolfmother - 3. White Feather
Fucking shit. (skips)

Priestess - 4. Murphy's Law
I know, life is hard little Priestess, but you're gonna be okay.

Priestess - 5. The Gem
Another familiar sort of song, though now I don't know who. Long-ass intro. And then it picks up to something. Hmm? (waits) I wonder now if they've been on tour with Saviours for real. ... Gonna say it's not bad, just kind of mediocre.

Ooh, Ren will like this:
http://www.last.fm/music/Priestess/+similar?page=5

Wolfmother - 4. Sundial
Nice start. Reminds me of some hair metal band I can't identify. Oh, dur! Guns N Roses. HEH.

Wolfmother - 5. In The Morning
Yeah, that's just what I want to imagine: Wolfmother, in the morning. (vomit) Oh christ, it's a gentle song. Should have figured. cuz nothing lasts forever, even cold November Rain... HOLY SHIT. SAME OPENING 1st/2nd LINE LYRICS! Is this a joke? WTF! I can't believe it... WHY WOULD YOU RIP OFF GNR.

Wolfmother - 6. 10,000 Feet
Please god don't be a Tool/HOF rip off. ... Phew, we're safe for now. Oh shit, I know this one, too. What's this one, the symphony era of every lame popular metal band during the 90s?

Wolfmother - 7. Cosmic Egg
A sped up ZZ Top. Seriously can't do anything by yourself, can you? Next.

ZZ Top - Gimme All Your Lovin
I haven't heard this in ages.

Now I'm reading shit about how Wolfmother and Slash collaborated on "a song". Hm. Hard to say where.

Wolfmother - 8. Far Away
WTF. Now you're ripping off fucking AN AMERICAN TAIL! MY FUCKING GOD WHY. lol at the ice cream truck music.

Priestess - 6. Communicating Via Eyes
Holy shit, hippies. Then it turns into a "real" song. This sounds great after five Wolfmother songs. No wonder the general public has low standards.

Priestess - 7. Lunar
This is rockin'... and now it's not.... and now it is... and now it's not. Familiar to the sludge brand of stoner metal without getting too deep. "hey ey ey ey eh" is a crappy lyric, however.

Priestess - 8. It Baffles The Mind
I'm expecting something Spinal Tap here, and.... Oh okay, you're going to be serious. Sounds like it's fun to sing, though. Hey, decent music, too. I'm sure I'll be returning to this one.

And it baffles my mind that I'm going to finish the Wolfmother recording now.

Wolfmother - 9. Pilgrim
(sigh) Back on their personal stereotype. Can see it ending up on the radio if it isn't there already.

Wolfmother - 10. In The Castle
Back to GNR impression. No I would not, at least not with you. I think I'm suffering stockholm syndrome at this point, however, since the song itself isn't that bad.

Wolfmother - 11. Phoenix
Wow, now they're doing something from Kyuss family. Uh, Brant Bjork? With a shitty vocalist, of course. Thank god that didn't continue. That would really hurt my soul to think that Wolfmother was getting more attention than fucking Brant Bjork, as he's still putting out albums. :(

Wolfmother - 12. Violence of the Sun
This song is currently how I feel about life listening to this crap.

Priestess - 9. Sideways Attack
I think I heard this before, actually. Pretty energizing. But... You're a what?

Priestess - 10. We Ride Tonight
Bulls, cars, horses, each other? ... And this song actually has a "riding" sort of beat. It, of course, changes. Could have just kept going with the flow, there, you know.

Wolfmother - 13. Back Round
A Fu Manchu for retarded people with a parrot for a singer. What's new?

Wolfmother made me want to kick a small animal like usual. Here are bands you should listen to INSTEAD OF Wolfmother and still gain the same overall results: every other band in the history of the universe.

Priestess is, for the most part, forgettable but they still put out better music than the vast majority of popular artists, and thus you should get this here album if you're inclined.

In conclusion, buy Black Cobra - Chronomega with your money instead.

I'm gonna go listen to the new Alice In Chains and cry now.

Song: "Spanish Werewolves"
Artist: Nether Regions
Album: demo? (2009)

I'm going to have to attach a laminated address travel tag to my pants so I get home safely from this one: Nether Regions is opening for FU MANCHU! here on Friday. !!!!!1~

I hate to be so enthusiastic when you all know I have no enthusiasm but I had caffeine today and this is AWESOME news.

As I said before, Nether Regions were really good live last month. I hope Dante's and the Fu crowd treats them well.

Oh, and Salvador(!!!!111!1`) is opening for them, too.

I forgot that I live in the mail void. Perhaps the KWC record will arrive tomorrow...

In the meantime, I will suffice on a streaming version of Russian Circle's new one, Geneva.

It seems less pointed than the previous record... less high, dotted sounds. But it sounds like Russian Circles. Maybe they've spent a little too much time around Red Sparowes, but it still sounds pretty "nice".

This album should make it to the internet in .rar format in 3, 2, 1...

Song: "Women"
Artist: White Shit
Album: Sculpted Beef (2009)

I can't hear all of the lyrics from this album yet, but this and a couple other songs on here made me laugh. This song is the most "insightful"... and totally lame.

This goes really well right after the new Black Cobra. It's sort of like a cross between earlier Big Business (or Karp or...) and Black Cobra with a few songs. But yeah. Overwhelmingly hardcore/punk thing happening. And the worst kind of vocals, ever - "talking" singing.

Like everything that was left over from all the why-me from Here Come The Waterworks and Mind The Crappy Production.

I should get Kowloon Walled City's new one - Gambling on the Richter Scale - in the mail very soon. If it's not in the mail already (still need to check - my mailbox is halfway across the earth), it will probably arrive tomorrow.

I'm pretty excited about it. I pre-ordered the whole set/package - shirt, black/silver LP, CD. I've been watching the KWC guys put everything together through their blog and twitter, and they announced they were shipping pre-orders eight days early. I got my shipping notification the next day. Assuming it's not in the mail yet, but tomorrow, they're five days ahead of schedule. Them's good business.

In less direct to artist fashion, I also pre-ordered other albums due to be released September 29th. God Is Good by the band OM was one of them. I didn't care all that much about OM before, my appreciation has been pretty limited to songs like "Flight of the Eagle", but this album is too "good". Doomriders also has an album out 9/29, but I decided to skip it over until I've established a clear base with them.

Of course, from all of my love-talk in the direction of Black Cobra since my first listen of "Sugar Water" last year, you should know that I pre-ordered their new album: Chronomega. Assuming amazon behaves, I should have the album sometime in the next two weeks.

I woke up today and found it had leaked.

I have the time today, so... Why not make a song-by-song "live" listening post?

(breathes) Here we go.

1. Negative Reversal.

Immediate thought: doesn't sound wildly different from the myspaced version. It'll probably clear up in experience in time, although I'm scared this might be a bad rip. Obviously I've heard this before, so there's not much to say. It's familiar to BC's earlier speedy heavy stuff.

space.

2. Machine.

Yeah, this sounds like a bad rip. Now I'm pissed off. Would it kill you leakers to maybe listen to your copies before spreading them everywhere? Maybe even tell us in advance that though it says it's 160kbps, it's really 96?

I'll keep going, but yeah... if BC did this on purpose to their sound, they made a really shitty move and should be punched in the face for being a disgrace to themselves.

This song sounds like it's going to need some time to sink in. I'm sure it would sound heavier and more stompy than "fuzzy" if it sounded right. Chaos does come out from the guitar, though...

3. Catalyst.

Here comes the BC opera. Myst soundtrack, like one of those "scary", ambient electronic rooms you're supposed to be looking for something but you have no idea what it is. Uh-oh, here comes music. Now we're black metal. Oh, thank god, we're not black metal anymore. I can get behind this. It's on par with all that love I used to talk about, and still... wtf? sweeet. ... That was great. I like this one for sure.

Fucking great. Even sounds awesome in shittiest quality ever.

Very doomy after all that ambiance... what we like about BC.

I drink too much tea break time!

Second listen: yes, like.

4. Chronosphere.

Dead world?

http://cnc.wikia.com/wiki/Chronosphere

Maybe time world.

Headbanging material. Like that guitar sound. Really easy to get into. Got that stoner rock/metal driving feel. I think the vocals might actually sound somewhat relevant to the song. PETTING MY BOBO.

Yeah. Yeah. Really nice, here.

5. Zero Point Field.

Right off, testing the drummer's ability to not fail at his job. Kind of wavers into a slower pattern after that. Not as immediate as the last two tracks, but still pretty nice. ... Then there's a musical interlude. I'm expecting it to return to something. Will it?....No.

6. Lightning In His Hand

Torche? SAVIOURS?! heh!

The 1:30 back and forth thingy is nice. Something about it sounds really familiar, not sure where from.

The middle-end is ...familiar Black Cobra territory. That's me not saying "nice" again.

Another break. Cookies.

7. Storm Shadow

Well, hi there. I didn't see you come in. Thanks for breaking down my door. I didn't need that, anyway.

...The little boys are going to lose their shit when they hear this live. I'm going to have to wear body armor.

Nice. Very, very nice.

8. Glacies en Spiritu

Wow, there hasn't been any real low point on this album yet. It's all 'intense' except for that piece in front of "Catalyst" so far.

Again, semi-clear vocals that might be important to the song.

9. Nefarian Triangle

OMG acoustic Black Cobra! lol.

...and it picked up, too.

The ending is sort of quiet... very much in contrast to the rest of the album.

(blink)

And that's it.

Well, since it wasn't the quality expected, this album is a lot like the first time I saw them live. The sound limitations of the room wasn't right for them, and though I got into them live and really enjoyed it, their set seemed too short and I was left wanting much more. On first listen, I already know I'm going to be listening to this a lot - especially once my CD arrives and I can rip this album for myself.

Time will tell how it holds up against their EPs. With the lack of quiet periods or subtlety, so far it seems more chaotic and intentionally striking than the previous two. I'm looking forward to my vain attempt towards figuring out the lyrics, and, of course, hearing this album performed live.

If you haven't bought this already, be sure to do so soon.

In conclusion, my love... for Black Cobra... still so vast.

Song: "Kashmir"
Artist: Led Zeppelin
Album: Physical Graffiti (1975)

This is a lazy song post because I've been out of sorts with the blog for the last few days. I cleaned and rearranged and cleaned some more, and now I'm left with a dead brain. But here's a memory.

I recorded myself making fun of this song when I was 14, in 1996. I would love, love, love to re-record it digitally for you guys but it's a long piece, there's a few blank spots and unfunny things that pad the whole thing that make the jokes "make sense", and plus I say some names. It's my psychology but they don't really need to be used in such a manner. I suppose I could use a program and blank out the names... Effort.

In any case, at that time, I probably had no real idea who Led Zeppelin were, and it's weird hearing my reaction to the song the first time I'd ever heard it. Yet, beautiful... So beautiful that I hear this song now and almost cringe every time. All I see turns to "brown"...

Anyhow, I can't really put any proper thought into talking about this song because it's associated with that one thing so much. So I will close with a joke.

Sounds like Danava.

Song: "Lester Stillwell"
Artist: Akimbo
Album: Jersey Shores (2008)

Better but not free from the suck yet.

This song starts out very energetic and tapers off, then re-builds in a more stoner-ish way... Very 'I went to art school' of it, but it still sounds great. I think this album has three more listens before it enters 'favorite albums ever' territory.

Song: "No Angel or Demon"
Artist: Witchcraft
Album: Witchcraft (2004)

Did I just post some band from another country today?! Well, here's another one. Patriotism is overrated (not to mention false).

I remember, vaguely, hearing this song/album for the first time. The production and overall guitar sound reminded me of an ex. I was fascinated that this band existed...

I remember that ex tried to call me for the first time on the fourth of July once, too... except I was in another state at the time, watching someone get an enema via x-ray while they were a couple of feet away screaming. That day will make the top ten most "interesting" days in my life. I'd like to tell the whole story because it's hilarious to me when I'm not feeling self conscious, but... it's not musical.

Maybe some NIN coming up here, soon, then...

That there Witchcraft there, they have a nice message about cosmic judgment in this song that I think I can relate to.

Song: "Eko Eko Azarak"
Artist: Electric Wizard
Album: We Live! (2004)

I suppose I could have looked harder. I seem to have forgotten a lot of songs I've posted at this blog... especially with the artists I've posted a lot of, ie Electric Wizard.

It's odd how such a slow/low song can be so catchy.

Since it's the fourth of July, I should write something about that. Hm. Well, this particular one, I was planning on a show but wasn't prepared for how fucking hot it was going to be. I'm dehydrated as it is without making it worse under the heat of a venue. Plus, I'm in a crappy mood and social shit does not sound interesting... as much as I am annoyed that I haven't seen BOTSC yet.

The good news is that it means avoiding crowds and people who haven't figured out that drinking themselves retarded on holidays isn't impressive.

Or any day... but it's easier to have "sympathy" for an alcoholic who clearly has some massive issues going on than it is a generic weekends and holidays asshole.

Pointless and backwards mass social activities are so fun and exciting for me. One of these days I'll get around to insulting everyone's vices. Something to look forward to...

Meanwhile, it's a good day for this band.

July 4, 2009

Song: "Dunwich"
Artist: Electric Wizard
Album: Witchcult Today (2007)

This was my second post at this blog, ever. It bears repeating. Also, I haven't posted something from EW in 8-9 months. It's about time. Fuck something new, this is great.

Today I learned that Tweak Bird is opening for Tool at various shows in the US. It makes sense given that Tool toured with Melvins several times, who toured with Big Business, and Big Business toured with Tool a bit, and Big Business' newest member produced Tweak Bird's album... but in the same, fucking wow. That was unexpected and pretty cool news to hear. I wish they were coming here (to an indoor arena). I'm not very optimistic about summertime Tool-having over here, but all the same... I hope the duo of bands wanders this way.

And also it'd be nice to see Tweak Bird in a larger place. Not that I don't like being up front and able to see everything going on, but bigger places = bigger sound.

Totally related to EW, I know. But just think... "child of dunwich rise" = "nobody's favorite sun". ... And you know who should tour with Tool, don't you? It's just a sideways, slighty off-center jump from Tweak Bird to Electric Wizard... at least as far as Witchcult Today goes.

Song: "Lost in the Dark"
Artist: Entrance
Album: Prayer of Death (2006)

This song is great. great great great. Overused word, so strange in its ways, but still... great.

Brainstorming something to say, I remembered this:

When I was 12, I was invited with a couple of other family members my age to spend the night over at someone's ranch(?) off a river. They had a full-on all-day camp thing going on for a bunch of the boys and this was either the first or last day of the whole thing, so a lot of others were invited to camp for the afternoon/evening. I'd never been there before.

All in all, it was cool. But my niece and I get bored so we had to go get in some trouble. We left the campsite to go hang out at the actual house on the property hoping to find something interesting. There was about a mile long windy road through the forest to get there, so we caught a ride from someone who was going back there anyway.

Unfortunately, the crowd was pretty thin at the house and though we went through the people's house and went to the river and hung out for a bit with some people sitting in a hot tub that was way too damn hot, it was pretty boring.

We were sitting inside for a while trying to decide what to do with ourselves, when we noticed... Hey, where did everybody go? All of the cars were gone from the driveway. We were the only ones there. They'd fuckin' left us. And it had gotten dark...

If I had been alone or with someone I didn't know well, I probably would have stayed at the house. There would have been something interesting in there to do, and then there's that warm bed thing that's so great. but yeah. I was with my niece, who is crazy and flipped out and said we HAD to make it back to camp. We'll have to walk.

At first this didn't seem like a horrible idea. It wasn't too long of a car ride. It was all paved road, and all we'd have to do is follow the road. The camp was right off the road...

But yeah, we didn't take into account that the house lights were lighting the road where we stood and there were no more lights after that... and the road was entirely covered on both sides and above by forest... when it was dark. We walked about a half of that road in complete pitch darkness, NO light WHATSOEVER, holding onto each other and dragging our feet to make sure we were still on the road. We were both yelling about not wanting to be attacked by mountain lions. I kept thinking we were walking off the skinny road, freaking out and stopping. I think she cried, and if not she certainly sounded like it.

Nobody gave a flying fuck when we got to the camp.

If I had any sort of fear of the dark then, it certainly isn't around anymore.

Album: And So I Watch You From Afar (2009)

Russian Circles.

Oh, hm. I already said that. Apparently.

Well, it's still funny.

Hey, this band's name and this song title form a complete sentence!

Song: "Changes Are No Good"
Artist: The Stills
Album: Logic Will Break Your Heart (2003)

I learned of this band because of "Still In Love Song" during the five minutes I had Much Music (Canada's MTV). I liked the lyrics even though they're a bit emo-ish and catering to the whiny demographic, so I checked out the rest of the album. I have continued to come back to the album despite it having no relation to anything else I've been listening to the last few years, and I still like the songs... so I think that says something.

This song is close to how I feel today. "I am the weekday on weekends".

Album: 200 Tons of Bad Luck (2009)

This sounds like Pink Floyd's "One Of These Days".

Song: "Gallop Song"
Artist: ASG
Album: Win Us Over (2007)

At this point, I can remember next to nothing about seeing these guys live even though it's only been just over a year. I was probably more concentrated on the fact that I was standing next to some freak I'd just met (I kid, you're the best freak ever). Either way, I didn't care for what they did live and dropped them from my view.

I recently started listening to "Right Before Death" a lot, and this song crept in with it. It's good... a bit hard to describe, though. They come from the same sort of thing as Torche, where the genre is metal, sludge, stoner(?) but they feel much lighter. This song definitely is like that. I have to say I like its beat, too.

Song: "The Kiss"
Artist: The Cure
Album: Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me (1987)

And another one that's unusual for the blog. The fucking Cure?! Yeah.

This song takes a while to get to the point, but the minutes spent on noise-making create the right mood for the vocal portion of the track. I recommend that you get this song as it is on the album, because the screech coming from the live videos I found has been toned down a lot. If you go to their myspace and in the player click "Albums", scroll through to this album and you will find a decent version of the song.

While you're at it, listen to "Why Can't I Be You?" ... and "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep" because that song... is one of the best, ever.

Song: "The Perfect Fit"
Artist: The Dresden Dolls
Album: The Dresden Dolls (2003)

Time to do an unusual song. I haven't listened to this at all in a long time, but there were a few months sometime around 2004 where the overall sound coming from The Dresden Dolls was interesting and I really liked this song.

You might know this artist between the songs "Girl Anachronism" and "Coin Operated Boy"... Well, this song is way more mellowed out. Maybe a little sappy.

Song: "The Wretched"
Artist: Nine Inch Nails
Album: The Fragile (1999)

I recall listening to this album when I was 17, loving it as a whole, and at first gravitating towards pretty much every song but this one. Most of those songs wore thin after a time, and before long I found myself hanging out with this one a lot instead. I remember I even called myself, in a chatroom, "wretched existence", for a handful of days because I was getting really sick of people confusing my usual name with something to do with Nirvana but had yet to come up with a better name.

I think that's about the very time I came up with one of my 'famous' and longest lasting of names. I was talking to a guy named Jay and he, like always, made absolutely no fucking sense, and he referred to me as a "satanic elf" as a joke. It was nearing Christmas, so I suppose these things were on the mind. I thought it was genius. And thus I became... Satanic Elf. Can't fucking confuse that with Kurt Cobain's idiocy, you uncultured fucks.

For the record, if any of my old jerk friends from chat(ro) or that other place ever read this... HI. EMAIL PLEASE.

Obviously I connect this album to a time period... It works like that.

Anyhow, more recently, I saw this band live. This is the actual "song" song that stood out through the show. Crazy, but true.

The actual song part of this starts about a minute in. I've been listening to this song since the summer... having not really gone away despite my annoyance with repetitive/dance music since then. It must be good, then.

Also, I was reminded of this artist recently because I overheard some interesting characters talking about this guy on the bus. I thought I was the only one who'd heard of him within my realm of existence, but I guess not.

Song: "Would?"
Artist: Opeth
Album: Burden (single) (2008)

Here's a pretty faithful cover of Alice In Chains' "Would?" done by Opeth. It doesn't quite have that extra bit of pathetic energy required to properly pull off anything by AIC, but is nevertheless pretty good. This lonely sample is a bit distorted, but this album/song is swimming all over the web so it shouldn't take you long to find it otherwise.

Song: "Flying Whales"
Artist: Gojira
Album: From Mars to Sirius (2005)

Here's the first song I ever heard by Gojira. It was a fine introduction as the band apparently stuck after this despite just barely crossing the line of the realm of my tastes.

It also suits really well when I'm as tired as I am today, having to quickly get mentally ready for so-called "metal" after a day of fun-rock excess. It's a nice bridge with that slow prog metal build and stomping beat.

Am I the only one that laughs at "...but it's true!" (4:48)? Someone tell him his punch has been spiked. Then again, considering, who would have the heart? He lubbs his whales...

Song: "Big Sta"
Artist: Oaks
Album: Bravo! (2008)

You know what sucks? You're involved in astrology enough to know the Sun Signs mean almost nothing to the whole of a person, yet you encounter particular Sun Signs in a very stereotypical format, causing you to believe that all of a particular Sun Sign suck in a specific way. And though this is ultimately true for you personally, that you're never going to get along that well with particular signs, you find exceptions in people who have astrology that leans away from their Sun Sign. I mean, they do kind of suck in that way, but you can no longer say anything edgy or important about all of that Sun Sign. Well, you could, but then you'd be attacked by idiots. And you might hurt exceptions' feelings.

Not that I've ever been in the feel good business. Too much effort, not enough truth.

So that was my thought when Oaks - "Big Sta" came on today. You should go find it, listen to it, transcribe its lyrics, and send them to me so I can see how well this entry doesn't connect in any way to the song.

Song: "Eavesdropper"
Artist: Hotel Wrecking City Traders
Album: Black Yolk (2008)

I did some minor research yesterday and came up with this. You will like HWCT if you like stoner rock, basically. Right off I noticed Karma to Burn impersonations not merely for the fact that they're both instrumental bands, however Hotel has a heavier, more physically solid sound.

This song might not be the best places to start unless you're in the mood for a wavering, in-flux kind of sound... but it made a quick impression for me, and thus my sharing. Also check out the first track on this album, "Cup Weekend Murders".

Song: "Where Beauty & Terror Dance"
Artist: Danava
Album: UnonoU (2008)

Well, I think I'm back. This was one tough week. In short, it was not as advertised. My so-called "fun" was muddled beyond my natural apathy, and I had to cut back everything. Nice fucking timing, motherfuckingsonofabitchshit.

I still caught this band live, outside of direct choice, as they were opening for another I have been long curious about (see previous entry). I might never have seen them without this kind of situation, as their recorded material hasn't impressed me. I've tried to do the the POV thing, but it wasn't working as I've been in a more "metal" mindset. I was half expecting to be bored.

They weren't bad. At all. What contrast between the recorded experience and live. Further, the singer of this band is one of the odder looking people I've seen (saying a lot because I see myself every day), which is not something you can capture through sound despite that voice. Odd, if nothing else, is interesting.

I don't know what song I want to include here, so I've gone with a mass-appealing one. Think updated 70s-style psych rock.

In any case, this band here, particularly with this song, has a heavy doom metal sound and throaty, combined death metal vocals. Some time ago I mentioned that Iota was coming out with a new album this year. It was released about a week ago.

This particular song is familiar to Kyuss (Welcome To Sky Valley), Dozer ("Exoskeleton"), Monster Magnet (especially Tab), pretty much on the calmer, more laid back spectrum of stoner rock. Though it is a freakin' long track, it's still entirely worth your while.

Song: "Indomitable Wall"
Artist: Stinking Lizaveta
Album: Scream of the Iron Iconoclast (2007)

Nice song. Their "related" artists according to listening habits are: Om, Electric Wizard, High on Fire, Ufommamut, Weedeater, Big Business, and Sleep. Not to put down any of these artists, but Stinking Lizaveta has a more 'full', comprehensive sound than these artists would suggest. They're kind of a doom-stoner-ish progressive metal as a whole, but they're also familiar to various prog and post-whatever acts out there. They're instrumental, so if you're annoyed with metal bands whose vocals are screamed but nevertheless enjoy the music, this may be what you've been looking for.

Song: "Dragon & Phoenix"
Artist: Black Cobra
Album: Feather and Stone (2007)

Upon further examination, I learned that Black Cobra has won my heart. For a moment there I was thinking the excessive listening of heavier albums in recent years was a practice of vanity. Training my ears for what? Apparently this.

He doesn't really need to scream like that, like a vicious toddler who's just had their favorite stuffed animal torn from hand; I think the music speaks for itself. But this is still great. Some of these songs are fucking gorgeous.

Besides what they have available to listen on myspace and a few assorted things to be searched elsewhere, you're probably going to have to download this album via a p2p program to sample it. If you're into really heavy and dark stuff, it's totally worth the trouble.

In the meantime, you get: "Red Tide" (straightforward song that comes before "Dragon & Phoenix") and another drink of "Sugar Water". Gotta love how the camera shakes in that video...

Song: "Vicarious Atonement"
Artist: The Mars Volta
Album: Amputechture (2006)

If you have never heard The Mars Volta, consider yourself lucky and I encourage you to avoid them in the future. There is no hope for the rest of us.

This album sucks. It's, just, bad. TMV falls into the category of artists who put out an album and only two songs on it are worth repeat listens. This album is particularly struck by this - the rest of the songs aren't even worthwhile filler. Between this and their stream-of-consciousness lyrics & crazy sound, this band appeals most to kids who entirely believe that anything they do is cool if it's unusual. There should be a flyer in albums like this reading "Welcome To The New Cliche".

All annoyance aside, this band does seem to appeal in a strange, disconnected fashion. They do have tracks that are very striking. This is one of them.

Song: "Here"
Artist: Gravity Kills
Album: Gravity Kills (1996)

GK was a relatively short-lived industrial band of the 90s. They had a few radio hits sort of a cross between Ministry in sound and Powertrip-era Monster Magnet in feeling, namely with "Guilty".

Upon hearing this band for the first time, I thought they were just the greatest fucking thing, ever. I eventually learned otherwise, but this particular song has always rung true despite how my tastes have changed over the years.

If you're a Sagittarius Moon, or have Moon aspecting Jupiter, or have a 9th house Moon, you are particularly going to love the hell out of this song.

Lyrics:
Looking through your window, a million miles from me
My ears are bleeding from the silence, echoing like rain I cannot see
Leaping from your window, a fall to set me free
A leap of faith is all I ask. Remove myself from all that used to be.
Now I'm here for all to see, everything torn out of me
Too late to drown in all my doubt. Too much too late to sort things out
When the clock is ticking, a twisted face I see
My sight is blinded by the darkness, It doesn't mean a fucking thing to me
Turning from my window. Nothing phases me
I built this perfect little hellhole. It seems to be the perfect place for me
Now I'm here for all to see. Everything torn out of me
Too late to drown in all my doubt, too much too late to sort things out

Artist: sHeavy
Album: The Electric Sleep (1998)

The Electric Sleep is usually where one is introduced to Sheavy, or at least finds that they can appreciate them. It's fairly effortless to enjoy. If you've yet to hear this band, the linked tracks I've put below should give you a good general picture of what they're like (although I've skimped on some gentler tracks).

"Virtual Machine" is... just wonderful? I love this line: "You say you need me but you always disappear". It's well written, and it has an overall music tone that matches the anti-emotional, needy quality of the song. Very nice, one of my favorite songs of the last few years.

"Destiny's Rainbow" is very easy to like, very easy to put on and let play whenever. Love the guitar.

The first song I ever heard from this band was "Electric Sleep". And, I think it would be safe to say that Hennessey has had an internet/long-distant relationship before. Poor guy. Give him a hug the next time you're in eastern Canada. Then go read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K Dick, if only for the definition of "kipple" (aka. the most interesting concept in the entire universe, ever).

"Automation"'s guitar is initially familiar to Fu Manchu, particularly the song of the last post. And then it becomes its own thing, great followed by further greatness. ...Are you human or just a robot slave?

Exercise caution: the lyrics in the middle of "Saving Me From Myself" will get stuck in your head. You will find yourself minding your own business someday in the not too distant future and suddenly feel inspired to sing that particular line and have no idea where this came from, since this is an unremarkable song otherwise. (Not saying it's a bad song - it just sounds like a lot of these songs.)

I've posted "Oracle" before. It's a band introductory track - many will find it difficult to get through the first time, but if you can get all of the way through the song you'll soon realize that you love Sheavy and there's no turning back because your mass cyberheartage for this band was natural, inborn, always there.

I think inventing words is where I'll stop.

Please give this band some love for embracing mp3 sharing - start with former drummer Ren because he is "frickin'" awesome. Nevertheless: Visit their site, listen to their songs via last.fm, check out their myspace, and buy their stuff. Also, spread the word because this band is WAY overdue for a proper tour.

Song: "Hell On Wheels"
Artist: Fu Manchu
Album: King Of The Road (2000)

I overdid myself when I posted "Saturn III" first and then followed it up with a subtle "Neptune's Convoy". After that I couldn't decide which Fu Manchu song would be next, thus getting behind on my make-believe music itinerary because I meant to post one of their songs a day or two ago. But, I think I figured it out tonight.

Again, if you're one of the many I know who've never heard Fu Manchu, you need to start. Yes, I said "need".

Song: "Time To Burn"
Artist: Masters of Reality
Album: Welcome to the Western Lodge (1999)

I find this song comforting after an exhausting day. How strangely poetic.

Lyrics:
Time to burn again
Fire for my friends
Time for your shift to end
I’m back to jack again

Realistic, crunchilicious
Everything is suck, suspicious
Mindless times, I’m feeling lazy
Turn me on and let’s go crazy
Dress me up and uniform me
Let’s pretend like you don’t bore me

Time to burn again
Fire for my friends
Fear is in m.i.a.
All that doubt this may
Kiss my ass man

Song: "Ashamed"
Artist: Muse
Album: Hullabaloo Soundtrack (2002)

Agh, distortion! Pain! But nevertheless a brilliant song.

How about a song that isn't quite a song, but a track? After all, I think you need to fill your life with trivial things.

Non-Song: "Frail Limb Nursery"
Artist: Slipknot
Album: Slipknot (1999)

I bought this album right after it came out, so I was enriched by this musical gold: "Frail Limb Nursery". You will like this non-song if you have a sick sense of humor. As for the sample, it's from the beginning of the video til 45 seconds in. "Gone, gone without a trace" is a commonly used phrase with me, even nine years past.

Edit: The video disappeared so I changed the link.

Song: "Long Hair"
Artist: Monster Magnet
Album: Tab...25 (1991)

Do a torrent search for this album. That said, this is a pretty, what, "groovy" song? It falls off the edge of the universe after four minutes in with Monster Magnet's standard "what the hell is going on"-isms, but the opening four minutes of this song are definitely something you want to consume via ear. So go do that and make me happy, mmkay? Actually, you'll really be doing it for the betterment of yourself. That's usually a good thing. ... Actually, nevermind. It isn't a good thing at all.

Ugh. My ears feel like they've been flooded. I went to my first show of the year last night, also known as the practice / get back on the horse show. I wasn't expecting to have my world changed, but it was just plain dull. Any moment of reprieve was soon ruined by more of the same dullness. I honestly do not know how a band can ruin their own material. I know better than to do things during a void of course moon, but the main "band" came on well after the void of course period was over... and still made me want to cry.

I should have learned my lesson when I saw my first dance-indie band, who I thought would be great live because their CD-format material was so gosh darn good, but went home needing metal in my life really fucking badly. I, really, knew better.

Like I said in my typical cryptic fashion, I hope this memory fades.

Song: "Aqua Dementia"
Artist: Mastodon
Album: Leviathan (2004)

"It's hard to stand around and watch while they ignore us..."

See also: a video! or the other Mastodon posts I've made, which are similarly amazing! Mastodon is your first warm hug after decades of loneliness, kids.

Song: "Hands Up"
Artist: Big Business
Album: Here Come The Waterworks (2007)

This. Album. Is. Amazing. You will like this particular song especially if you're a fan of metal-style drum & bass. It's a very hyperactive song.

There are a lot of videos of Big Business playing live on youtube if you care enough to search them out, but unfortunately not many of them have very good sound.

Song: "Yesterday Don't Mean Shit"
Artist: Pantera
Album: Reinventing the Steel (2000)

Nevermind the music, the lyrics of this song are genius.

There's nothing special about it
It's either there when you're born or not
Gifted with talent are no big deal
Welcome to the death of a century...

[chorus]
Cause yesterday don't mean shit
What's over is over and nothing between
Yesterday don't mean shit
Because tomorrow's the day you have to face
There's no rewinding time
Yesterday don't mean shit
Yesterday don't mean shit

Reliving old reviews is a useless tool of confusion
Don't hold your breath for the turn-around
Come into the world of endless odds...

[chorus]

They'll tell you about guilt
And in time you'll face the darkness...
But darkness is a friend to you
Embrace and fly through the madness
Flying past god and wars and conflict
Oppressor in you
Oppressor in you
Plowing through minds and paranoia
Oppressor in you
The oppressors in you

[chorus]

Yesterday don't mean jack shit...

You protect you and I'll keep to myself
It can only be that way - yeah!

I'm going to get lazy with the posting of these songs soon, if not immediately after today, so be prepared.

That said, here's a decent song.

"Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want", the Smiths cover by the Deftones. You can find it on their B-Sides & Rarities album, which is more than worth it to any Deftones fan, and is doubtlessly my favorite Deftones album.

Core is an indisputable staple rock record, so it's easy to pass over and consistently ignore certain tracks being that they all are, by default, good. That said, I owned Core for nearly ten years before I gave a shit about this song.

"Where The River Goes".

This song is, of course, by Stone Temple Pilots.

A few years ago, I was recommended to listen to the band Dream Theater. I downloaded a copy of Octavarium. I didn't understand what the fuss was about, but okay, I liked a few of the songs.

Some time later, I went on a lyrics search for the song "Sacrificed Sons"... only to find a sea of lyrics for this song, none of which matched what I was actually hearing. What the fuck? I did a lyric search instead, and eventually came up with the fact that I wasn't listening to Dream Theater at all, all of this time. The song was actually called "Oblivious" by the solo artist James LaBrie... AKA the singer of Dream Theater. Someone had apparently sent a fake copy out into the world, or otherwise just didn't know the difference.

James LaBrie - "Oblivious". If you like traditional heavy rock and/or vocals in your metal, then you'll enjoy this song.

If you hate Dream Theater for being pretentious or boring, then you'll probably like Elements of Persuasion.

I forgot about this song, and just heard it. It's a really nice, clean, well-produced song with a slow, calming beat. It generally comes across as fantastical. Various idiots around the internet compare her voice and the musical style to Bjork, but Bjork has a certain over-the-top hyper intensity that this band entirely lacks (which is a good thing).

Bat For Lashes - "Horse and I". It's from the album Fur & Gold.

Combichrist is an electronic band with a pseudo-goth image. Their apparent hyper-masculine seriousness is hilarious to me, which I'm not sure is intentional or not. Nevertheless, a few of their songs are excellent.

It seems the songs I like tend not to be what other listeners like, so this may not be an accurate picture of what to expect from them. In any case, the song for today will be "All Your Bass Belongs To Us". As you might expect, this song is full of bass. It has a trance-like style, and is mostly instrumental. You can find it on the album What The F*ck Is Wrong With You People?.

1000mods. I just heard this band a few days ago, and I'm already impressed. Check out their song "Boor". With this song especially, they are familiar to Kyuss. The album it comes from is Blank Reality EP, which you can download in part on their myspace.

I'm going to break a rule and recommend more songs for today. We'll see how badly my archiving system gets screwed up by this.

...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - "Will You Smile Again?". It comes from the 2005 album Worlds Apart.

Great song by an overrated band. You can hear the whole song here.

I heard about 57chevy because of some stoner rock compliations I found. I liked their songs "Sun Rose Twice" and "Diemansion", so I went to their site to hear more, and downloaded all of their material from there. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that they're online anymore, and the band apparently doesn't exist anymore, either. Still, I have to recommend them.

"Slogan Man" is a good song, and it gets stuck in my head all of the time. I've done some searches and can't find it anywhere, but it's on the album 440 Six Pack. Check out those other two songs if you can.

Edit: Sludgeswamp has this song.
