Last.fm said I'd like UFO. I was, like, bitch, you don't know me. And last.fm was like, "but E-nudge! I do! You can't deny my superior ways! You gave me Tool and now I know everything about you!" And then last.fm tried to propose, and I said yeah, whatever and screwed around with Soulseek on the side, then broke it off at the alter. Fucking tell me you know me, who does last.fm think it is? Anyway, yeah. I've heard the name UFO before, perhaps as recently as in the Swamp. I don't pay much attention to recommendations of bands that were active before I was even born, however. I think I have the basics down well enough from my couple of years of regular classic rock listening and spend most time lately listening to what's been made in the last 5-10 years save for my favorites. But my recent open recommendations-taking led me in the direction of UFO. I looked at their page, "Doctor Doctor" was the number one played song, so I downloaded the album it came from, Phenomenon. I was expecting nothing of real weight, and I heard: Oh. Well, okay. You got me there. March 3, 2010
I don't need to hear this song again today. Murder City Devils - "I Want A Lot Now" Sounds exactly like high school, except there was no car. How about: Living's no good in this hick town and/or city Gonna be home and instant message my friend, he's *thumbs up* February 26, 2010
Dragontears. The first time I saw this band's name, I assumed they'd be some mediocre metal band, probably sounding like a whinier Opeth. Instead, upon pressing play, I heard psych rock in the vein of Hawkwind and Monster Magnet. Surprise surprise. Most of 2000 Micrograms From Home sounds pretty mellow, but "Borderline" is upbeat and drives the revival 60s/70s psych rock sound home with that echoed synth. I'm thinking other songs on the album are better, but this is a fine place to start. Check them out, maaaaan. February 19, 2010
"RA" by Seven That Spells. The first time I heard this song I was immediately reminded of the MYST soundtrack. It sounds like when you're "exploring" some creepy bedroom, particularly in the bit that doesn't contain any drums. Short of my associations, this is really good. I wouldn't have been particularly receptive to it right when this album came out but it sounds great now. If only for this song, a hundred and one stars out of five. February 18, 2010
Dopes To Infinity "Look To Your Orb For The Warning" This song reminds me of the time in my life between 2002 and 2004. Astrology junkie times. I remember getting one of these Dopes songs stuck in my head on a long drive once in 2002, when I didn't have any music. Might be one of the causes for my brain infection. This was also on The Matrix soundtrack in 1999... I got that the day I saw the movie in the theater at Clackamas Town Center, before I saw the movie itself. My friend was doing it, I had the money, and it was already established that half of the artists on the album were good to me. I haven't listened to it in ages... and upon grabbing the album just now, I see that Ministry's on it. No wonder I knew who they were when I finally came around to listen to them. Durr. "Wake Up" by Rage... I listened to that eight hundred times when I first had this CD. I remember making fun of him. It was the "EUGH!" bit at 3:30 that got me laughing. Holy shit is this a painful listen today. Stupid album reminds me of my ex(s), now. I did a quick check of an old email account earlier and noticed I had a photo in there from one of them (though I couldn't tell which one til I checked). Fucking old. I don't even remember the context of getting it. Might not have been one. But jesus, man, get a room with yourself. You mistook me for some lady who has a delusion. I already burned your wicked garden. Now I'm distracted by STP. Fucking hell. What is this, my high school reunion? Fucking Monster Magnet. February 9, 2010
Someone's been doing some leakin', and thus the album has arrived to the internet. It's actually late considering some in Europe already should have had this, but all the same... White Hills just released their self-titled album. Not very creative of them, but I'd put my name on this if I were them, too. It's wonderful. If you have 13 brain minutes to spare, check out the song "Let The Right One In". I can't help but notice the similarity of this name to a recently popularized Swedish vampire movie. The lost, droney bullshit you'll find in the song fits the movie style as well. Maybe it's a coincidence, but I doubt it. By the way, if you can tolerate this song, go listen to Headdress. February 3, 2010
I can't... believe... I haven't posted this song yet. Two years, two and a half years!, and still nothing. And after listening to it eight million times, or 84 times since mid-2005 according to last.fm... 5 hours of my life, gone. "Blue Sky Mind" Naturally, of the Blue Sky Mind album that came out in 1996. It's too bad I didn't have a last.fm (or audioscrobbler as it was at the time) eight months earlier than I did, because then I might have a record of actually hearing this for the first time and be able to say something definitive like it was one of my first listened favorites, but I forget now what order these songs went in after "Electric Sleep". Yeah, it sounds like Black Sabbath. What are you going to do? Everything around here does. Odd, considering I tended to avoid Sabbathisms even when I was exposed to them growing up. Sunday is a shitty day, and even now after all of this I'm still cracking up at "serious" metal. That "then you know they'll tell you a story" line at 1:20 pleases the Gemini in me. No, the other one. Oh, and in case you haven't heard, there's a new Sheavy album out this year. Possibly even two of them... February 1, 2010
Tweak Bird just posted a new song to their myspace:
It sounds more relaxed than Reservations material, more in line with what's been seen of them live this last year. Still spaced the hell out, especially with the indefinable instrumental bit... oy vey. And today was Melvins' first day in the studio, in which they posted this video of their dual percussion abuse: Also, today I heard Trent Reznor's recording? Recording what, I guess we'll find out. Ditto on Parade of Storms, though I'm sure they're recording a Parade of Storms of album. And that damn TB song put me right in the mood for Ancient Age's "Angela". If she'd've listened to me, she would still be aliiiive. January 30, 2010
New White Hills album in a few days if you're from Europe or internet-capable. Otherwise, 2/23! Buy it. It's their self titled. And while you're setting up this thought in your head, go listen to 3/4 (Three Quarters). It's like you never left Mars... January 21, 2010
More teasing. In between bits of interview, there's a new song. It starts around 2:00-2:20. January 20, 2010
Red Sparowes' new album is due out April 6th. Here's a pretty teaser: January 18, 2010
Another teaser from the KARP documentary: There's also two other vids under that youtube account. January 7, 2010
Song: "Gimme Back My Bullets" This song is relaxed and good for relaxing. I miss seeing these guys live... They don't seem like it by listening alone, particularly with a song like this that doesn't stand out above like most others they've done, but the two shows I've seen them do have been very nice. Warm and inclusive sound, and their stage presence is outstanding. I recall hearing/seeing this song and, despite being a bit underwhelmed by album listens, thinking it sounded great live. See, in trying to find a link, I just found out it was a cover. I had no idea.... because I was born in the 80s. Nevertheless, I've recently heard about them doing shows nowhere near here, and I'm jealous. January 5, 2010
I can't find any real information on this band, which is unfortunate. They sound familiar to some Portland/Seattle bands, and I could see them playing with a band like Black Elk or Rabbits. They're new and far, far away, so I doubt that's going to happen... but you may also notice the similarities. Two videos (of several I found). January 5, 2010
Song: "Tie Me Up! Untie Me!" This song is sooo miserable and sad all by its lonesome. It's one of those songs that you can only listen to in particular moods, or mindsets when you can ignore the talk-singing or somehow find it endearing. On one hand, it's almost embarrassing to think I "own" this album. Seeing when it came out, though, I can understand the appeal. I was on my own Thirteenth Step program. I must have related even though I don't know the words. And the titles... are interesting. So are some of the lines used in the songs. Pretty sure this guy gets laid despite acting like a fucking baby about it. It's too many metaphors. I suddenly have an urge to listen to Black Elk. January 2, 2010
Song: "Antler Wings" Hey, like, this song doesn't bore me to death. Congratulations, Ancestors. It's a first. And possibly also a first for Ancestors to fit a whole song on a single side record... This split comes out sometime in 2010 from Volcom. I suggest you head on over to Volcom right now and sign up for their split vinyl club. December 29, 2009
Song: "Muscledog Shot" This might have come out in 2001, but there are two versions of this album and I can't get any straight information on this band. I have the one with 15 songs. Most days Winamp has no idea what I want to be listening to, but some times it hits right on the money. This song's very welcome and stoner rock warm and nice and all of that shit. The following song, "Not Okay" also sounds really nice, though probably better in context, after this song. Nevertheless, oops, missed the boat again. December 25, 2009
Song: "Starlady" I didn't realize how "ironic" me listening to this band today was until I started to write about something else in this text box "for" you guys. I suppose nearly every band I like would be ironic, but yeah. Pentagram. .... I should do a show where the main character wants to change the name of Christmas to "circle jerks" and describes giving presents to ungrateful six year olds equivalent to "accidentally" coming on someone's face. This character will be a 54 year old alcoholic who was a minister until "that incident in front of 7-11". "I bet those Indians don't celebrate bullshit holidays like Circle Jerks," they say in a huff, pointing at some invisible person in the corner. Halfway through the rest of the rant, punctuated by a sudden "HEY!", the connection drops. I make a statement or two about the importance of mental health care and not being too proud for a weekly sit-down with a shrink. Two calls later, a nice-sounding lady finds the show and apologizes for her dad. They don't normally let him near a phone, but you know... you should be nice to everyone on Circle Jerks. The punch line is the obvious one about his daughter needing to go wash her son's face now. k thx bye! Heartwarming family Christmas stories make me feel more whole inside. I'm glad we could have this momentary time of psychological bonding, internet. Til next time I have something irrelevant to say about a song I like... love to hate you!! <3 December 11, 2009
December 7, 2009
Song: "Sometime Wednesday" This song is great. Yes. This album as a whole has gotten better with time, particularly with its best songs which this one obviously qualifies. Unfortunately, it's one of those songs you can't listen to when you're in a low, dumb mood because it does this: Son, you can't bring your gun in here. We're going to have to confiscate that at the door if you're coming in. I don't know what you're going to do now. Maybe it's going to be Sometime Never for you, eh? Maybe a little Sometime Five Minutes In The Car Beforehand? And what's this semper fi crap? You don't sound particularly faithful with your talk about other people. You're hitting Sometime So Last Summer right about there, pal. SHE SAID DO-NT, DON'T LET IT GO TO YOUR HEAD, BOYS LIKE YOU ARE A DIME A DOZEN. /abrupt end December 2, 2009
Song: "No Complications" 20 years, huh? Timeless. I can't find a sample of the song. There's this, though. December 2, 2009
Song: "Running Up That Hill" Also try not to be cheesed to death by the original song: it has a video. November 29, 2009
Song: "Bludge" If I was human, I might like this song. Overrated in the so-called "underground" whatever-the-frig scene but nevertheless good. November 13, 2009
Song: "Scumbag Blues" I have decided, upon 2-3 listens, that I like this song. I do not, however, have the mental incapabilities or benefit of doubts to take in the whole product. But this song sounds nice. Reminds me of something, I don't know what, but my first thought was Liam Lynch... well, before I heard the recycled Queens of the Stone Age riff. November 11, 2009
I tried to quickie review Them Crooked Vultures about this time yesterday, but I don't think it was remotely entertaining. I wasn't even my usual sarcastic, angsty self because I was tired. Basically all I did was say that the album sounded like Josh. And that I'm not impressed. People who would/will be impressed are people who do not come from the Kyuss-Zeppelin camp, whose knowledge of QOTSA is limited to the last album or two, or are following Dave who seems to welcome mediocrity. So keep your standards and expectations low, folks. I'll return to it later when the burn cools off. I didn't like Era Vulgaris the first time I heard it, and it's fairly typical that I don't like music the first time(s) through, so we'll see how I feel in time. That said. Puscifer came out with a new thingamajig yesterday, entitled "C" Is For (Please Insert Sophomoric Genitalia Reference Here). I've heard most of the songs in some respect already, so it doesn't have an especially novel feel... but it's something to have. I've already talked about "Polar Bear" here, but... It seems a general improvement alone over "V". I think I only listened to "V" entirely through once. Afterward, I just picked songs, and lately I almost never listen to it. I don't even listen to the original "REV 22:20" anymore, actually. I suppose it has a lot to do with bad timing. I posted "Queen Bee" as one of my first songs here, right when it came out... Also that was right when I was deciding I'd rather listen to High On Fire and Electric Wizard than electronic rock. I'm sure if "V" had come out a year or two beforehand, it would have had its time. (...a seed of hate from the day i was born...) But yeah, "Polar Bear" is pretty good. Kind of like Portishead minus the pretentious art school shit. It's fully digestible. "The Mission" I have also posted, and it sounds like it's the same mix. This song doesn't have a whole lot of hope with me, as it's going to forever be latched in my brain right next to the spot dedicated to Ren. I watched The Fifth Element again a few months ago, once connected in my head to two old friends both named Mark, but somehow these very direct and physical/visual references have muddled in light of the one person I know not named Mark. I'm curious to see what connections falter whenever I see Resident Evil again. Nevertheless, "The Mission" lost its objectivity for me. "Momma Sed"... I can't recall what the original sounds like now, but this version is pretty nice. It sounds like Pink Floyd wanderings, breezy depression straight out of The Wall. I prefer this version of mister Maynard over the throaty pseudo-rap. I also don't remember the original version of "Vagina Mine". Hmm. I'm sure it sounds better than the original, since I made it to the end. And the end is pretty nice. Woah, for a sec there I thought "Potions" was going to go QOTSA on me. ... It's pretty weird how Maynard's associated music and vocals have changed over the years. I wonder who, in 1992 or 1996, would believe he'd eventually come out with a self-released mellow electronic rock album. It seems a little off-the-wall, such a jump. He's made some gradual changes over the years that have made sense in context, but... it makes you wonder what kind of ridiculous garbage you'll be up to in 15 years. "The Humbling River" is pretty mellow, too. With the violin bit, it sounds familiar to A Perfect Circle, but still maintaining that overall electronic/experimental sound. I smirked at the song title/lyrics, considering his Moon in Cancer. Boy is it nice to listen to a group of songs from an artist and not be immediately and constantly reminded of dozens or hundreds of other artists doing the same thing at the same time... This went down much smoother than expected. I don't think I even made one sarcastic, bitchy, or stupid comment! Oh wait, I see one. Well, anyway... Thanks, Maynard! This was better than "V" by a leap. I didn't catch to stop the album when it was finished and my winamp decided it was time for me to listen to Black Cobra "Negative Reversal" now. C is for... Chronomega. November 10, 2009
Song: "The Destroyer" Heh. This album was released the day of a new moon in Gemini and the first song is called "The Destroyer". If only I could hear the lyrics in order to figure out what the song's actually about. In any case, I love the energy of this song. ... Strangely, the first song that came on after this was "Over The Mountain", aka "don't need no astrology". November 5, 2009
Didn't do my research so I don't know if this is good or worthwhile, but since you guys normally like free shit... November 4, 2009
Song: "Unonou" Speaking of Witchcraft... Danava needs more love. Here, in general, by you, wherever. I went for a while thinking that this band's name was pronounced "dan-ih-vuh", because we here in America tend not to pronounce our a's with much effort. Turns out, it's "don-ah-vuh". One wonders what the process was to achieve this made up word and why it has unusually pronounced a's. As for the album/song title, my best guess is "you no know you". Or that's what I tell myself so that I can spell it. It almost makes sense, considering one of the songs in this album is called "One Mind Gone Separate Ways", concluding a lack of knowledge about oneself. Anyway, Danava is great, and I have to say I'm looking forward to whatever wavering introversion they have to share with the world in the coming years. November 4, 2009
Song: "Witchcraft" It's weird how long this song took to sink in. Or for me to post it, even. I think I've hit a musical plateau. It's strange how people interpret music with their body. It seems so arbitrary. Why would a series of noises equal a physical reaction? Everyday noises never seem to, even noises that carry a beat like fans, but yet when presented in "musical" format... it does. Why? And why do some people hear music and randomly move however the fuck they feel or would move regardless of the actual music, while others literally or semi-artistically interpret the music as a particular body movement set? Monkeys with instruments. I'm going to start telling Sweetie she better watch out for those monkies, but especially the ones with tom-toms. But someday, Sweetie, I'm buying maracas and there will never be sleep for any of you again. I will leave every room shaking the shit out of those things while singing about my hatelove for sons 'a bitches and shitty kitties. So maybe she'd better keep me out of maracas stores and forget the fucking monkies. Actually, this sounds like too much work. I'll get a tape down and set it to play every day at one in the morning to make up for when I need to rush out of doorways. Like when I have to help someone who's becoming a victim of street crime. I'll be Maraca Lady, saver of street crime victims. And Sweetie will cry, why not meee? And Bobo Gaygay will be like, cuz you're a slut, ho. And then I hit Bobo over the head with my super maraca, accidentally killing a flea in the process... My arch enemy. And the day was saved at last. We can now eat popcorn and dehydrate in peace. Sunsabitchez, sunsabitchez, lots and lots of sons and bitches and bitches sons and sons with bitches and bitching at sons while sunning at beaches, [maraca dance] OLE. SURE, I'd love another, Bartender! It's almost like content!! November 3, 2009
Song: "Shot The Cat" Did someone around here recommend this band at me? It sounds like all/any of you who I talk to, so I can't recall even by educated guess... I also can't find this song online. Why not? Dumb. The lyrics are stupid, apparently about someone's drunken behavior, but somehow it works. Plus? Bass. November 1, 2009
Song: "Thong Song" One of the weaker Kyuss songs. And that's saying a fuck of a lot, since this song is great. And now I'm getting distracted by other Kyuss songs. I haven't listened to them properly in a while. I forget how much I love them... until I have an internal conversation with myself wondering who my favorite band is these days seeing as how I barely listen to Tool or Kyuss lately. It's tough to say. But after listening to "10,000 Days" and Blues For The Red Sun, I simply don't care anymore. October 28, 2009
Song: "The Sweetest Curse" This thing is getting all sorts of ridiculous praise which I'm trying hard not to pay attention to. First time review aside, it seems it's actually good. It has that contrasted heavy meets light sound that I think Torche does better, and I'd still rather listen to Akimbo for the whiny yelling + heavy sound and a dose of entirely worthwhile, inspired, groovy beat, but all the same... It works. As is apparent, I love insulting music while simultaneously praising it. Sounds like I have self esteem issues I need to work on. Ha-ha! Never! You're all a bunch of fucking losers! I love you, thanks for visiting. PS. To the youtube person, I am actually ignorant enough to call Baroness a prog band. October 28, 2009
Song: "Resistance" The beginning of this song is dull, but it speeds up and gets kind of catchy. And it seems this whole album is 1984-based... The book, naturally. The movie sucks. Nah, I just said that cuz I'm a jerk. In any case, you know what's awesome? Five assignments and two midterms to accomplish in two days. Here goes more procrastination! October 25, 2009
Song: "Naked" That video is completely youtubed in quality, but still... It's something. The title reminds me of this one time. I was talking to a friend online, and she was telling me unimportant bullshit as we all know women do. For some reason, she was describing what was going on around her in real life, even though I had absolutely no form of reference. Apparently someone knocked on the door for her dad, and they were outside. She noted that she saw them just outside the window. She said something like, That strange man is walking under the window now. And I said "Is he naked?" She replied, No, but I am. Please come and rape me. I'm so soft and impressionable. And I said, Bitch, I don't need your herpes. And then she cried. I could hear her sob even eight time zones away. And it was good. Anyway, the story ended with her LOLing herself retarded because I asked if that stranger was naked. I didn't realize it was that funny, but nevertheless... I still remember. The song is way better than my shitty story. October 22, 2009
Song: "Polar Bear" Puscifer has a new single. It's apparently on the radio. It sounds safe, too. Nice and mellow. Gotta say I like it. Hey: this album comes out November 10th. October 19, 2009
Song: "Bird Signs" My last SubSpace writing completely sucked in terms of quality. Here's a better one. You ready?
This is really good. October 9, 2009
Song: "Christmas On Earth" This song sounds like its album title. ... Distorted. This particular song sounds like White Hills. The rest is more Monster Magnet after a crack bender, or any one of those psychedelic/"head" bands. And it sounds like the myspace/youtube version of the song is a little different, so you'll need to find this one as per the actual album... PS. Title immediately made me cringe, then I connected it with Zillagord, and life was good again. October 2, 2009
Song: "Uprising" This, too. Test your knowledge of the band, or music in general, by watching the video. It's funny in a sad sort of way. The first part of the interview is the best part. Someone translate. October 2, 2009
Song: "Queen" This'll hold you over. Because you haven't heard it before and it totally wouldn't be expected of me or the blog. Strangely, the second week in, school is already trying to kill me. Not sure if it's a conspiracy or just a delusion based on the previous three months of laziness. September 28, 2009
Song: "Geneva" If you're familiar with Russian Circles, this song is a bit unassuming at first. Once the intro and building up, post-rock crap is done with, it has some guitar work that... is spiffy. 2:22, if you lack patience like I do.... but it's more effective in context. Well, all Russian Circles sounds better in context... September 24, 2009
I forgot that I live in the mail void. Perhaps the KWC record will arrive tomorrow... In the meantime, I will suffice on a streaming version of Russian Circle's new one, Geneva. It seems less pointed than the previous record... less high, dotted sounds. But it sounds like Russian Circles. Maybe they've spent a little too much time around Red Sparowes, but it still sounds pretty "nice". This album should make it to the internet in .rar format in 3, 2, 1... September 23, 2009
Song: "Women" I can't hear all of the lyrics from this album yet, but this and a couple other songs on here made me laugh. This song is the most "insightful"... and totally lame. This goes really well right after the new Black Cobra. It's sort of like a cross between earlier Big Business (or Karp or...) and Black Cobra with a few songs. But yeah. Overwhelmingly hardcore/punk thing happening. And the worst kind of vocals, ever - "talking" singing. Like everything that was left over from all the why-me from Here Come The Waterworks and Mind The Crappy Production. September 21, 2009
Quit sucking Shrinebuilder's collective dick and go listen to the new FU MANCHU track. Signs of Infinite Power is out in t-minus 29 days... (PS. 3 of the first 7 plays were me. Myspace is totally more awesome than facebook.) September 18, 2009
Song: "Drawing The Line" This song starts off "pretty" and delicate but takes a turn... which I hadn't noticed in my quick sampling of the album early on. The way he says "line" the fourth time in the chorus, in addition to the stompy beat... I say it's at least fair enough for a repeat listen. He's taking control, ho! September 16, 2009
Song: "Akathesia" At first this song like, er, am I supposed to give a shit? Seriously, why am I listening to this pointless fucking art-noise? (I turned off Britney Spears for this?!) Just as you're about to lose patience and click ahead to another just-as-difficult all-build psych-out Space'd song, it hits. 2:45. EE! I have a thing I call "shiver". It is the exact moment between sober and the state of inebriation, punctuated by a twitch or shiver. This song is a little like the shiver. If you would rather not try as hard for aesthetic reward, go for "Bird Signs" on their myspace. So far you don't have a choice unless you have $10. Or a friend in the diamond business. OPEN MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY TIL EIGHT, SATURDAY AND SUNDAY TIL FIVE. September 15, 2009
Musicfest Northwest starts tomorrow. This MFNW is hardly what it was last year, but there are a few good bands scattered about the venues in town. Entrance is playing Holocene on the 17th, OM on the 19th should be decent. Their new album is fucking great - I hope someone brings in a video camera. Even just a digital sound recording would be great. For the majority of people who might read this, though, there is one show in particular that I think the lot of us should and likely will attend. But assuming you're unaware or need a little push... GO SEE RED FANG. They're playing Saturday 9/19 at Ash Street Saloon. They're supposed to start their set about midnight... However, due to the lack of actual metal at the fest this year, this venue ought to be packed well before midnight and you may have trouble getting in if you procrastinate. Seriously, don't show up late. The lines and crowds last year were ridiculous. Doors open at 7pm, and the first band, Diesto, plays at 8pm. Don't be a disrespectful fucking idiot and miss them. The other three bands are great in their own right, but if you like Red Fang, you need to show up for Diesto. They have a bunch of new material that I'm sure they'll be playing live for, what, the first time? Second? You can hear some of it on their myspace. It's pretty nice, and I don't know who I'm more excited about seeing between these two bands. Also, to cover the bases, Nether Regions will play at 9pm. I can't imagine them being anything short of decent despite not seeing them since their formation. I mean, they're opening for Black Elk and Seattle's Mico de Noche next month... And those myspace tracks are pretty doomy. Must be pretty good. Rabbits will follow at 10pm. They have a sort of punk/garage-y version of metal sound, sludge, sort of like Akimbo. They've played alongside pretty much every low-sounding metal band in this city plus a few punk/psych/experimental pseudo-rock bands. And then there's Saviours. Do I need to say anything about them? They tour a lot. They've hit Portland at least five times in the last two years. You probably know who they are even if you're completely unconscious on the local "scene". But yeah. Yeah. Really. You need to go to this. This show could very well be the last time you will be able to see Red Fang for the price of $10. If you have yet to see them, for the love of all music ever (but especially hard-rockin' metal), do it now.
Oh, and add yourself to the last.fm event if you're going! September 13, 2009
Song: "Sweet" Sounds like Torche... I mean Floor... I mean ? I had a song by these guys hiding out on my hard drive a year or two ago... No idea where it went. Can't even remember what it was called. Damn. Oh. "New Cross". Thanks, internet. Yeah. That was/is a good song but I couldn't find material on them when I tried so I gave up. I think I was even going to post it, once. Randomly this album showed up online at a blog I read a few days back. I had almost forgotten about them. Nice. September 11, 2009
Song: "Coin Operated Boy" Slaves. September 9, 2009
Song: "Hanglider" It looks like I just found another track I need to have youtubed. It seems this came out in 2002, but that's all the information I can find. Nevertheless, this song can't be any more great than it is. It's instrumental and very "stoner" aka mellow. If you haven't heard it, you can find it on torrent sites for right now. In the meantime, hey guess what? Fu Manchu's coming out with a new album next month. They're also touring at the same time. Should be more dates coming soon for those of you who don't live on the west coast. September 8, 2009
Song: "M.L.K." Wow. I thought it sounded like hippie drivel when I heard it live, but that was nothing. I like the guitar/bass, though. It has a nice slow beat... but yeah. Holy god damn. This is like the hippie anthem. Especially at the end. Fuck. Since this hasn't hit the blogosphere yet as far as I can tell, I'll get this up soon. September 7, 2009
Song: "Time Flies" A couple of years ago it was normal for me to do work/research on bands I was thinking about seeing live. In the last year, I just... don't. Laziness, perhaps, or maybe just not caring. It's not like I'm going to be able to setlist a band any better if I listen to their material beforehand, and if I already know them then I should have an idea what to expect regardless of new material. Plus it's nice, in some cases, not knowing what you're going to get out of bands. The love and the hate is a little more pure. In this case, this album finds me just days beforehand. I haven't listened to the majority of PT's discography, and though I really like some of their work, it's not with intensity or sick curiousity. There are only so many ways you can present acoustic mixed with standard electric rock and continue to sound interesting to someone who mainly listens to a heavier, louder, largely more aggressive sound. But, hopefully, if/when I do see them, they'll surprise me like they did when I saw them the first time... I'd been listening to Mastodon's "Blood And Thunder" on repeat that week and I left the show pretty touched. Today OM is winning over Porcupine Tree, so all I can say that this isn't half as awesome as three quarters of the new OM record... but, as for what I've sampled, this song has a familiar PT sound - circular, icey toned with warm vocals that seem nostalgic rather than "present". It seems to go off into Pink Floyd-ish, "Money" territory at some point - can't believe I caught that on first listen. It's nice, albeit long... but that's Porcupine Tree for you. (For the record, the clip up there is only half the length of the actual song.) September 6, 2009
Song: "Cremation Ghat I" More pretentious hippy shit from Om. Did you see that interview they did for Such Hawks? Fuckin' stoners. I hope I don't ever sound like that and I'm serious. Still, this is Tool quality decency. It's out 9/29 just like Kowloon Walled City and Black Cobra and Doomriders. September 29th is a very heavy day this year. Get a pre-order if you like "II" on their myspace - the half-conscious blogosphere is already eating this album up. September 1, 2009
Song: "Abraham Lincoln" I keep forgetting to post this song. I read through some show reviews a while back for this band and there seemed to be a consensus on this song being good. I paused my angst long enough to see if I could get into it, and yeah, it's okay. A little bit too much like Big Business' "The Drift", but... that's a good song, and this is okay, too. August 30, 2009
Give or take a day, October 18th this year is my 10,000th day. I wrote this in 2006. anyway, today... THIS april 20th? i get to remember this day as the first time i ever heard "10000 days". I heard Opiate, Undertow, and Aenima around the same time in my life. I might have overheard a couple of their popular songs on the radio before this time, but 1997 (when I was 15) is when I was first exposed to the band. About a year later, I decided to actively take an interest in the band's music. I listened to Aenima pretty much every day for a year, and therefore songs like "Stinkfist" and "Pushit" are strongly attributed to my teenage angst. Over the next few days I kept writing about the album, and my mind changed on a few things. Especially "Jambi". Fuckin' "Jambi". August 30, 2009
Song: "Fang" I'm pretty sure the moon doesn't do that. August 29, 2009
Song: "Scorpionica" When I first had Orange Goblin material, I was immediately drawn to a few songs and didn't care about any others. This is generally how I start out with new bands, and if they're going to impress me as a whole or fill any sort of aesthetic void in my life through other songs, it'll be a while before I know it. This is one of the songs that got through over time... "This is stoner rock/metal" is about all the song needs to be described. It's a little too white noisey for an introduction to the genre if you're coming from a radio background, but it moves well and there's that little bit of guitar fuckery in the middle that breaks up the hum so it's not "difficult". Then again, is any stoner rock difficult? No. August 27, 2009
Song: "Kashmir" This is a lazy song post because I've been out of sorts with the blog for the last few days. I cleaned and rearranged and cleaned some more, and now I'm left with a dead brain. But here's a memory. I recorded myself making fun of this song when I was 14, in 1996. I would love, love, love to re-record it digitally for you guys but it's a long piece, there's a few blank spots and unfunny things that pad the whole thing that make the jokes "make sense", and plus I say some names. It's my psychology but they don't really need to be used in such a manner. I suppose I could use a program and blank out the names... Effort. In any case, at that time, I probably had no real idea who Led Zeppelin were, and it's weird hearing my reaction to the song the first time I'd ever heard it. Yet, beautiful... So beautiful that I hear this song now and almost cringe every time. All I see turns to "brown"... Anyhow, I can't really put any proper thought into talking about this song because it's associated with that one thing so much. So I will close with a joke. Sounds like Danava. August 18, 2009
Song: "Retina Sees Rewind" I didn't realize Cave In could be good. Sounds like Torche. Those of you who know what "view source" means might be having nice times at my blog these days. If you have firefox it'll come up green. There's better ones in my history... August 17, 2009
These guys don't sound like my inner thoughts at all. Which leads us to the question... what do my inner thoughts sound like? Nope, nobody wants an answer to this question. Just check out the vids they have on their profile. August 15, 2009
Song: "Always" FINALLY getting released. Hm. I don't see it online anywhere. Fuck. More waiting. But what's this, two songs on the myspace? Oh, okay. Well, let's see... Sounds a little on the QOTSA side, moreso than one would naturally expect but nothing too extreme... Nice, either way. Looking forward to more. August 15, 2009
Song: "Counteraction" I would rather a different song but I don't see anything else from this album, so here's just a sample start so you get the idea. I can't remember how I found these guys other than myspace, likely sometime in 2005. Possibly a little before or afterward. Either way, I could immediately tell from their music that they grew up the same generation as me - in fact, they're all exactly my age. I wouldn't be remotely surprised if any of them were friends with people I went to high school with, either, because it all sounds horribly familiar and possibly not just because of the obvious radio band similarities that they have going... First band they remind me of is Floater, who I don't actively listen to but the "sound" of the music is about the same. They had a song up a while ago that was a System of a Down rip off. It's clear someone in the band is a Tool geek. Sensing some Deftones/Korn appreciation as well. Essentially what I'm noticing here is a mid-to-late 90s alt metal radio thing. I think the sound they had before was more obviously dated in worship, as this seems a little heavier in sound overall. Actually, it sounds warmer and therefore nicer in general. Might have something to do with not having myspace quality being in the way for once. After Kyuss and Electric Wizard and Gojira and Black Cobra Elk Bird FangO))) Sabbath, I don't think I can sincerely return to this until my next spine adjustment appointment... but I know a number of you aren't strapped to the stonerisms and tear-inducing screamings and heavy bass/drums like I am today and will, actually, care for this without a problem. It's funny that I premised these guys but didn't warn you when I posted Reverse Dotty. August 13, 2009
August 12, 2009
Song: "Baby Please Don't Go" Budgie. A type of bird. Also a band. Even if we don't know the name or the band, we all know "Breadfan". It has all of that energy and then an interlude followed by a repeated series of energetic sounds, common in popular songs. People like tension. People also remember the song itself better because it's an opportunity to repeat the original message and repetition is key in making stupid people stupider... Shut up, you liked it. This song is more relaxed and doesn't hook you the same way. For those that don't know: sounds like Led Zeppelin minus the dick in the vocalist's hand. And this is a cover. I wonder if Budgie ever had groupies. As in, consistently and female. According to my generation's logic they're not an attractive bunch. I find myself drawn to the shrill guy in the glasses, though. I'll look up the astrology... heh! Sagittarius Moon. Figures. And Mars opposite Mars by about six degrees. And His Venus square my Sun. Well, there you go. Anyway, shit post, good song. August 11, 2009
Dear "Space Is Deep", I tried to write you a letter the other day but all of the other letters in the world that could have been distracted me. You are incredibly under-rated. If anyone in the world doesn't like your songly ways, they are a fucking idiot and should be shot to prevent devolution. lub, -me. PS. 3:43. hello. August 9, 2009
Song: "Doom Moon" I have another parody coming. Til then, here's a band you probably heard of before I did that sounds inspired by Earthless. And what do you know, they're related. Red Octopus has a show coming up in Seattle with Sandrider, too... We here are Sounds of Sagittarius don't have very narrow listening habits at all. No idea who "we" is. It's just me. Me and Bob. Good luck finding information on this band. Apparently they only operate as a figment of your imagination. August 5, 2009
Song: "Hey" This song sounds like a couple of 14 year old boys wrote it. Fucking infectious, though. It's going up on the player one of these days. Til then: August 4, 2009
Song: "Vasoline" I was going through 90s tapes a couple of weeks ago. Even though it was taking me at least until a notable lyrical piece to remember where most of the songs on the tape came from, and I hadn't listened to this particular song in ages, I immediately recognized it. It was sort of like staring into a mirror and really seeing yourself even though you see yourself in the mirror all of the time... Not sure that makes sense the way I've phrased it, but yep. I had a username for years that I stole from this song. It's difficult to remember why I liked this song so much before, why I haven't been listening to it other than maybe it stopped fitting what I wanted to hear. What's its appeal? It doesn't seem all that great on the surface. Maybe I've been blinded by over-listening. Er, can you blind hearing? Anyway... it's weird. I like it. Don't know why. But it's there. Enter enthusiasm here. July 30, 2009
Song: "Lester Stillwell" Better but not free from the suck yet. This song starts out very energetic and tapers off, then re-builds in a more stoner-ish way... Very 'I went to art school' of it, but it still sounds great. I think this album has three more listens before it enters 'favorite albums ever' territory. July 26, 2009
Song: "The Painted Desert" I went through some old writings this morning and noticed (again) that I tend to go through phases of bands/types of bands. While I don't think the particular "psych" phase of this past winter has returned, it's strange that I keep listening to this. Why was this band's timing good for now? or, even, how can I consume this without a problem but bands of similar style I can't even spend a whole minute on before getting completely bored? Anyhow... This is brilliant in its simplicity. There's not a whole lot going on here. Instrument, voice. It's pretty quiet. The vocals sound like they're recorded in a warehouse or bathroom with a very high ceiling, but I'm unclear on the instrumental echo. The mood is pretty compact... and the song sounds "fresh", like after rain sort of wet. Lyrics: "let me in"? Not sure what that has to do with painted deserts. The whole album has a hippie/indian theme so I suppose it's irrelevant. July 26, 2009
Song: "Passive Aggressive" I'm still mad that this band sounded so great to me for years and then when I saw them live it was like being raped by a ghost. No pun intended. I have happy thoughts for them anyway. If you don't see the humor in this post, you're totally smarter than me. July 25, 2009
Song: "Conan Troutman" I heard it was going to be a hundred degrees, and just like that... KYUSS TIME! It's highly unlikely that my core "audience" has not heard Kyuss... but if, for some reason, you have arrived here and the word Kyuss did not immediately strike the "yay!" part of your brain, "Conan Troutman" is a good place to start. It's short and sweet and easy. I wonder if Conan's middle name is Rainbow.
Edit: Fucking weird, I did it again. The last Kyuss post was during an Aquarius Sun and Pisces Moon, and this is a Leo Sun and Virgo Moon. Exactly opposite in both ways. ...And the 100 Degrees post of last year has the same astrology as this post. Leo Sun and Virgo Moon. WTF. Not intentional. July 22, 2009
Song: "Von Braun" I meant to post something by 35007 nearly two years ago when I was recommended them originally by Zillagord and some last.fm thing... I have no idea why this is the first time I'm actually doing a post on them. They're not the most interesting band in the world for me as they have a little too much repetition, but they're great for certain moods, particularly when you are/want to be relaxed. Though not apparent with the youtube song I've linked, the actual "Von Braun" stereo song is interesting in that part of the instruments are played only in the left ear and the "spacey" sounds travel back and forth and "stop" on the center-right at the end of the song. I don't know if that's intentional or it's just my copy... but yeah. It's a weird feeling afterward, my left ear having gotten so much of a workout after listening to this with headphones. It's like standing to the side of a band playing. It's refreshing to hear an equally centered song right afterward. Don't you hate when people describe music who have no background in music whatsoever? This is why I don't write "reviews". July 21, 2009
Song: "Arizona" My attention span has held out long enough to listen to this completely but not all at once. I may be deaf, but the album seems to repeat the opening song over and over throughout the album, but with different sort of mood. Overall, though, it's sad... and this song takes the cake on the sadness factor. Don't let it catch you in a bad mood or the birds and the emptiness at the end will eat your soul. Amazing. Truly. Beautiful song. July 19, 2009
Song: "Powwow" No Benadryl was harmed in the making of this song. Duuuuuuude...... they're called, like....... Indian Jewelry........ and.. like..... they have a song..... and it's called... like..... Powwow..... mannn..?....... Awwwwesome.

Song: "Fingertraps" This band would be an excellent opener for Red Fang. Someone who is involved with booking do something about this. They've both played with The Ax, if you need a bridge. In any case, I just found this album today. The music gets a bit disjointed on first listen, but it's simple and short and there are only two instruments going on here so it's not like it "sounds" difficult. Though this post is for "Fingertraps", check out "Ajax" on their myspace for the idea. I'll try to give up my two-person band addiction next year. Edit: Check this out. July 14, 2009
Song: "Venus in Red" I sampled these guys briefly due to their tour with Nebula, which I don't think is happening anymore since the local show now lists different bands (OMG: Mongoloid Village, Sandrider, Entrance). If you haven't heard them yet, either, now's a good time. This song is a little bit on the psych side, but I'm hesitating calling it that. It certainly has a familiar sound if you know related bands or just the genre of stoner rock. Warm, soft, easy to listen to, nice groove, good vocals... and I'm talking about the split version, which is most apparent in the video below. July 11, 2009
Song: "Evil Eye" Kind of like a more standard-rock version of Fu Manchu. Vocals a bit annoying to me, but they're not out of place. I just prefer a deeper, warmer voice. All the same, the song is good. I like it. Oh yeah, and they're doing a show with Red Fang in August. The bands definitely blend together well. July 8, 2009
Song: "Simple Man" The last entry made me think of two years ago, and two years ago this week I saw Deftones live, finally. There were a lot of people there dressed up for Dumb and Gay (dir en grey) and the crowd was gothy in general, so while waiting in line we were all solicited by a religious guy giving out flyers and such. It was a long wait so it was a nice, amusing interruption. That was also the first time I went up on the balcony for that venue. Some drunk guy wouldn't leave me alone. When I quit responding he started elbowing me... incredibly irritating. The show wasn't ruined but I definitely wasn't feeling comfortable after that guy started talking at me and threw all kinds of creepy vibes at me. Used to happen a lot... Still does, just less concentrated. ...Youtube just randomly went down so I can't give you a song. You should hear this album, even if you're not normally a fan of the Deftones. It's fucking brilliant - best album they ever did. Edit: Of course, two seconds after I pushed "save", it worked. July 7, 2009
Song: "Dimestore Diamond" My headphones completely gave out shortly after the last song. Sometimes when 'phones break you can twist the cord and hold it in place to get sound... which I was doing, but I accidentally moved the cord out from under the tape and it wouldn't go back. In other words, I'm using earphones now. I can hear everything around me in addition to the low quality sound that earphones produce. Like the fan across the room, neighbors outside... meh. Kids, don't use earphones unless you don't give a fuck about your hearing or music in general. I bought a new style under the same brand I've been using... I hope they're worth it when they get here. Anyway, I didn't listen to this album short of "Heavy Cross" until I put in my earphones yesterday. It may sound way off from what I "hear"... and so far the first minutes of the album are cool but I'm not impressed with the rest. This song is first on the album (good choice). It's pretty simple and has a fairly classic sort of sound, including for them. As always, good, clear vocals. I bet they'll do a video of this song, and it'll be some kind of fashion show thing. July 4, 2009
Song: "No Angel or Demon" Did I just post some band from another country today?! Well, here's another one. Patriotism is overrated (not to mention false). I remember, vaguely, hearing this song/album for the first time. The production and overall guitar sound reminded me of an ex. I was fascinated that this band existed... I remember that ex tried to call me for the first time on the fourth of July once, too... except I was in another state at the time, watching someone get an enema via x-ray while they were a couple of feet away screaming. That day will make the top ten most "interesting" days in my life. I'd like to tell the whole story because it's hilarious to me when I'm not feeling self conscious, but... it's not musical. Maybe some NIN coming up here, soon, then... That there Witchcraft there, they have a nice message about cosmic judgment in this song that I think I can relate to. July 3, 2009
Song: "Lost in the Dark" This song is great. great great great. Overused word, so strange in its ways, but still... great. Brainstorming something to say, I remembered this: When I was 12, I was invited with a couple of other family members my age to spend the night over at someone's ranch(?) off a river. They had a full-on all-day camp thing going on for a bunch of the boys and this was either the first or last day of the whole thing, so a lot of others were invited to camp for the afternoon/evening. I'd never been there before. All in all, it was cool. But my niece and I get bored so we had to go get in some trouble. We left the campsite to go hang out at the actual house on the property hoping to find something interesting. There was about a mile long windy road through the forest to get there, so we caught a ride from someone who was going back there anyway. Unfortunately, the crowd was pretty thin at the house and though we went through the people's house and went to the river and hung out for a bit with some people sitting in a hot tub that was way too damn hot, it was pretty boring. We were sitting inside for a while trying to decide what to do with ourselves, when we noticed... Hey, where did everybody go? All of the cars were gone from the driveway. We were the only ones there. They'd fuckin' left us. And it had gotten dark... If I had been alone or with someone I didn't know well, I probably would have stayed at the house. There would have been something interesting in there to do, and then there's that warm bed thing that's so great. but yeah. I was with my niece, who is crazy and flipped out and said we HAD to make it back to camp. We'll have to walk. At first this didn't seem like a horrible idea. It wasn't too long of a car ride. It was all paved road, and all we'd have to do is follow the road. The camp was right off the road... But yeah, we didn't take into account that the house lights were lighting the road where we stood and there were no more lights after that... and the road was entirely covered on both sides and above by forest... when it was dark. We walked about a half of that road in complete pitch darkness, NO light WHATSOEVER, holding onto each other and dragging our feet to make sure we were still on the road. We were both yelling about not wanting to be attacked by mountain lions. I kept thinking we were walking off the skinny road, freaking out and stopping. I think she cried, and if not she certainly sounded like it. Nobody gave a flying fuck when we got to the camp. If I had any sort of fear of the dark then, it certainly isn't around anymore. July 3, 2009
Song: "Start a Band" Russian Circles. What do I win?! Oh, hm. I already said that. Apparently. Well, it's still funny. Hey, this band's name and this song title form a complete sentence! June 30, 2009
Song: "Shittown, USA" I was waiting to do a post on this band until I had gotten into their material and therefore had something more interesting to say than the obvious... Not quite there yet. Nevertheless, I've had a few searches here and at the previous blog location for this band, so I might as well get the obvious song out of the way. If you're from Portland, you may already know Mongoloid Village. If not, you should. Here's your learning experience. Also, Mongoloid Village blogs: mongoloidvillage.wordpress.com. I went to the show that that video is from. I made an underwhelming "review" that you can read if you're feeling masochistic. June 30, 2009
Song: "Grim Reaper Blues" No idea how I missed this before tonight. I was doing my rounds and finally someone updated Nebula's tour page with a Portland date. It seemed logical but I couldn't be sure til I saw that. This band opens, and I went looking for a sample. I found this. I knew Paz was still around making music but I never followed her. That's too bad, because this hardly ruins the image in my head of what APC was when it was great... what with being a completely different genre and all. Stoner rock and assorted 60s/70s-inspired creepy nonsense: June 27, 2009
Song: "Dalas tar" That's "Rat Salad" backwards. As in that one song. By that one band. Because there is a lot of emulation around here. I was just listening to this original(?) version, and somehow it's better than what made it to Blue Sky Mind. Plus, it sounds great right after the demo, more "psych" version of "Gun It Jam". I'm thinking about putting it up in the little white box over there as soon as I do changes with that. In the meantime, you can find both songs online in Blue Sky Mind format. Also, Sheavy should have a new album later this year. Hopefully, that's good news as they recently lost their since-BSM guitarist. June 25, 2009
Song: "That One Song" You know what they say.... Only the great die in June. Yep. This guy had a definite mark on my childhood. I have a clear memory of being about six years old, sitting in the backseat of the car with my brand new stuffed fox hand puppet that was bought for me at some nature park. It took a lot of begging to get my parents to do shit for me relative to the moment I wanted the shit done because they're both cheap bastards who hate children. So I finally got something when I wanted it AND it was cool. At this moment of happiness, leaving the park, hitting the freeway with Foxy on my hand, "Thriller" came on the radio... I ended up losing Foxy after a couple of days. I have NO idea where he went. I think I found him a bunch of years later when I didn't give a shit anymore, then RE-lost him. Really. I was a pretty organized, "aware" kid. I knew where my stuff was. I don't know how the hell he disappeared. Foxy also reminds me of "Foxey Lady" by that other guy.... I wonder why? I also remember being about 12-13 years old, listening to Z100 and they were saying they were going to call MJ in the hospital he was staying at after he collapsed on stage. It took a while but they actually did it. I recorded it and still have the tape around here somewhere. What was that guy's name, Nelson? I think he pretended to be the president (Clinton), hence why he got passed by so many people... That was also around the time I was at the mall one afternoon with my mom/sister and we walked by a tv in the center walkway of the mall to see a white bronco being chased down the freeway by police. My sister made us stand there for something like two hours. I was bored out of my wits. But yeah. Videos. Most memorable videos in the history of videos, ever? (Assuming a lot of things here, wouldn't it be great to get MC drunk and molest him silly?! Especially as in that scene he does in Party Monster, with the song he makes up on stage at what they thought was going to be a rave.) My favorite was the one with the 20s gangsters and the bar even though the song is annoying. But yeah. I think we can all agree on the above song and video... June 24, 2009
Song: "Til I'm Blind" I saw this band about nine months back. All I remember now is that the singer was pretty animated and seemed to know what he was doing, unusual of my experience of new-ish/underground/local bands. I didn't expect to like them but they stood out from the entire show and I thought that I'd have to check them out in the future. Unfortunately for them and maybe my special local live band brownie points, I can't decide if that'll be soon or not. Five bands is too fucking much for apparently shitty venues I have to pay $30+ to get home from when the door cost is probably not even half that, nevermind the cost of food/drink seeing as how I'd be away from home no less than 7 hours even if I didn't see the whole show to waive the No Car Fee. I'm bored and in need of some good musical experience, but probably too broke to be THAT entertained. In short, I hate local venues with their packing on of extra bands to sell tickets when I just want to see two bands starting at a reasonable time, not be there more than three hours, and get the fuck out before I catch alcoholism (because it's a "disease", see) and/or get dusted in idiot residue and wake up the next That wasn't short. You know what IS short, though? ... My patience. Anyhow, I hope that if Dark Skies ever googles themselves the way Tweak Bird and KWC/Snailface and Tad did, they see the humor in this post and send me an email asking me if I'll help them put together a domain website because, like, geocities is, like, soooo 1997 ago. June 16, 2009
Song: "Craigslist" This song is grand. Weird Al doing a Doors impression. Add video skills from Liam Lynch, and you get... this: I still have a copy of Alapalooza around here somewhere... June 15, 2009
Song: "The Lost White Brother" It's like SunnO))) and Fever Ray meeting up in the middle. June 12, 2009
Song: "Heavy Cross" This video is so much better than the one for "Standing In The Way of Control". I'm not in the mindset for the sound of The Gossip these days, but I'm still looking forward to this album... June 9, 2009
Song: "Is This It" The song is stuck in my head, so it's getting posted. I am grateful to whatever led me to this band early on because otherwise they'd be in the pile of bands that piss me off simply because my ex listened to them. I haven't heard everything they've put out, but I like The Strokes okay. Doing a quick search, apparently the first time I heard them was January 15th 2002. (These are the rewards you get for writing things down...) Here's what I said a few days later, with links added for the sense-making. arg. pollution. i've listened to hard rock consistently over the last several years (since i was 15, at least) and suddenly i'm liking a ... non rock genre song. the strokes remind me of modernized 80's punk music. iz classical.... deftones and mudvayne. yeah, that'll make me happy alright. yeehaw. See, I've been doing this for years. Nine years of getting distracted by other songs when I go to post about just one. Oh, and mislabeling bands' genres, too. ...With my love, it's all she's ever needed. June 7, 2009
Song: "Changes Are No Good" I learned of this band because of "Still In Love Song" during the five minutes I had Much Music (Canada's MTV). I liked the lyrics even though they're a bit emo-ish and catering to the whiny demographic, so I checked out the rest of the album. I have continued to come back to the album despite it having no relation to anything else I've been listening to the last few years, and I still like the songs... so I think that says something. This song is close to how I feel today. "I am the weekday on weekends". June 5, 2009
Song: "Sheep & Goat Judgment" It's been long enough. Here's the other song you should have listened to when I posted the other song, but for some reason didn't because you only do what I tell you to do and that's that... Speaking of which, I need you to go to the store for me. I need lots and lots of food. And shampoo and a computer chair with wheels. Also, my Karpet's looking nasty so you need to also vacuum when you're done with the Big food Business. You should follow that with a good scrubbing. I'll be sitting on one of my Thrones talking to one of my Tight Bros From Way Back When if you need me. June 5, 2009
Song: "Blank and White" This song made me LOL. It's awful, frankly, but I was letting it play regardless because I'm trying to give ... peace a chance. Yeah. So anyway, I was listening not-so-consciously, working on shit. The song was about to end, and though I'd been bored with the song this whole time because it's the same old crap, I was suddenly struck with conscious recognition of what goes on in the song. There's a moment at the end... it's, just, priceless. Nice one, there, Briananson. This entry needs editing so bad but I have no idea where to start. June 1, 2009
And since I didn't have a song sample for you back when I posted the song originally... Shrapnel - "Combat Love": June 1, 2009
Song: "Jack" And this is for Jack... Though my Jack's an angel despite being a huge fucking tease. This song sounds very much not like the sound Danava has created for themselves. It's more... something. It seems to come from the same "place" but it doesn't have that extended, introverted, thoughtful sound. In any case, Danava has since taken the demo off their myspace/etc, so I'll upload the song later on. Edit: Only took me two hours... May 26, 2009
Song: "Amaze Disgrace" Was just a matter of time. If you're not convinced, stick around for the 4-5 minute mark. May 25, 2009
Song: "Criminal" Today, I wake up and need to stay away from the heavy rock/metal until my health and hearing has equalized. I have no idea how the hell I get so health-disturbed from these things sometimes. When this song came out, I was initially okay with it. It got old from overplay on both the radio and tv, and because I was in the writing/creative mood all of that year, it wore off so much that I started to re-write the lyrics for myself. For a while it was only "I'm feeling like a crack whore" but I felt I could do better, and wrote the song as holy as possible, changing key words and phrases so it would be a song about a girl being a drug addict. It was beautiful. Crack Girl Don't you tell me to deny it [CHORUS] Heaven help me for the way I am Help me but don't tell me to deny it Hey, [CHORUS] Lemme know the way [CHORUS] And since I posted that, I might as well post the other good song parody I did which is much, much funnier... Song: "Gods, Frauds, Neo-Cons And Demagogues" This album seemed to have a lot of hype around it. It sounds pretty close to a lot of stoner rock and lighter-end doom... It just has a little extra something do it, or possibly something less. I think, for that reason, I'm a little lost. I like the drum-heavy title track even though the first moments of the song are misleading... so maybe it'll grow over time. Now this song is much more comfortable and familiar to my style. Bass. And a slow decline. May 22, 2009
Song: "Got 2 Let U" I've listened to this song quite a bit in recent months. It's a nice, simple song - weird but comfortable. I think I got this album about two and a half years back because of a sharing community, which would make it one of the rare decent finds from the lady masses. I sing to myself about how I'm going to forgive myself for letting me down because I'm so pretty, too. |
