December 2008 Archives
Song: "My Hands Are Turning to Bricks" Artist: Kowloon Walled City Album: Turk Street (2007)
Slowly these guys' material is wearing off on me... but it's a pretty natural sort of thing, considering that they assume a "sounds like" of Black Cobra, Akimbo... er, Does it matter who else?
Doing a waltz might be a little difficult with brick limbs.
Song: "Start Your Digging" Artist: Big Business Album: Here Come The Waterworks (2007)
My humor seems to come out of (possible) misery. I had a LOL moment tonight. My computer monitor committed suicide. I can't avoid the smell of burnt rubber. I had pretty much no warning, so I didn't have any time to transfer data, burn anything, etc... and all of my new music I was going to listen to is on that now monitorless computer. God damn. Oh well, I'll get a new one soon enough.
It's funny because of astrology, naturally. I thought today went so well, considering my transits, but then that happened... So beautiful in its purity of expression. The Sun and Mars are currently both in Sagittarius, very close together, and both very close to exactly opposite my Sun. FIRE BAD. Sagittarius can be a real bitch for those of us with LifeADD. But... Opportunity! Hope! Change is coming! In mere days, my websites will be actually viewable to me and maybe I can play with photos and templates again! OMG OGM GMO!
PS. HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE NEEDED TO TURN ON THESE LIGHTS? PPS. Yes, I know it's wrong. PPPS. One hundred and fifty. PPPPS. Will do you no wrong. PPPPPS. It's a PP pyramid. PPPPPPS. Look at 'em go.
Song: "While You Were Shouting At The Devil, We Were In League With Satan" Artist: Zimmer's Hole Album: While You Were Shouting At The Devil... (2008)
Found out Meshuggah is touring here again soon. Their openers appear to be sub-par, so I checked to see who Seattle had instead [those spoiled jerks]. This name came up.
The song needs to be experienced for full effect, methinks. I will say it sounds like a cross-breed of a thousand metal bands.
Edit: The tour website I checked out to find out the openers lied to me. No Hole for Seattle.
Song: "Minoton Theme Song" Artist: Minoton Album: Splendid Vengeance (2008)
YAY! I can finally do things like type numbers and parenthesis, see clearly the world wide web, and listen to music I feel like listening to!
These guys are doing a show with Mendozza and Salvador in approximately two months. If you do not have the mindset for the level of heavy these two bands put out, you will enjoy Minoton. They have rock.
Song: "Forget the Minions" Artist: Karp Album: Karp (1996)
The internet looks slightly different with a monitor that was built in this decade. Pictures, too. I did not know my photos from pre-2004 had that much grain/pixelization in them. Some, yes, but not that much.
Anyhow, this song has a little of a slow start, but then goes somewhat nutsy. Because I dictate all that is good in the world, this is a good thing and you will consume if you have not already. Hey look, it's Jared from Big Melvins, but ten years ago!
Song: "War" Artist: Harvey Milk Album: Special Wishes (2006)
I dedicate this song to my cat, Jack. He's the cutest little fucking bastard I'd like to kick for my own amusement, ever.
Don't worry, PETA! I only kick HACKS when he's sleeping! When he dies, inevitably for being a lazy sleepyhead, I'll sew his CUTE!! fuzzy carcass to the other dead cats waiting in my freezer so I have a nice sweater to wear on chilly days such as today. I can't wait!
He totally just walked in the room.
Song: "Enough Said" Artist: Sepultura Album: A-Lex (2009)
This song is short and sweet, which likely makes it more endearing than if it were stretched out like this album is. It vaguely reminds me of the first time I heard Slipknot... Something about the way the song is put together is quite familiar. Most of the album is like this. It's easy to get into, which surprised me. I think I've listened to all of one or maybe two albums of Sepultura, and this was years ago, so to find this a natural listen kind of caught me off-guard. Have I listened to this kind of metal often enough, or is it really, actually... good?
It's too early to have a proper sample of this song for you, so you'll just have to rely on what they have uploaded to myspace for now (try "We've Lost You"). Or, you know, the other thing with the blog searching and such.
Song: "Witching Hour" Artist: Old One Album: Stonerrock comp 8 (2008), Droning Earth 16 (2008), Old One demo (2007)
I said something a while back about Electric Wizard being good concentration music.
Ditto about this song. I'm completely aware of its existence as it begins, but by two minutes in it's like another part of my brain.
Song: "Little Bag of Gloom" Artist: Monster Magnet Album: 4-Way Diablo (2007)
Take your pills, take your pets, and go rolling down the road I got a nasty little bruise thanks to your last episode Well you're so cold and I'm so gray, and I can hardly save the day Think we're falling into darkness, running blind You got troubles, yes it's true, and they all begin with you If you don't let somebody in, you're gonna die in liar's gin But you never wanna row towards the origin of stones And you locked away your heart one more time
So take your books, take your broom, take your little bag of gloom And I'm lost, and I'm through, and I'm crying out for truth Maybe when you're all alone, you'll realize where love comes from But until you take that time, you're just blind
Song: "Assassin" Artist: Muse Album: Black Holes and Revelations (2006)
It took me a long time to actually get into Muse, and I'm still not over the feminine vocals or the fact that they're, well, radio garbage... but they nevertheless put out some really good songs, both on this album and otherwise.
I'm not sure how to describe this song at the moment, but if you haven't heard it before methinks you should give it a listen. Just the opening little piece is worth it.
Yep. I'm in a bit of a musical/expressive rut, likely due and advanced by the fact that nothing is happening. It snowed five or six days ago and has yet to go the fuck away, and we here in Lots Of Hills are practically trapped until the thermometer rises and stays above 32 degrees. Strangely, I am not bored. Yesterday I discovered I was a direct descendant of William the Conqueror. This may or may not explain everything.
Song: "Everything I See" Artist: The Mighty Nimbus Album: The Mighty Nimbus (2005)
I download a bunch of random albums tonight to see if I could inspire anything or find something perhaps even brilliant. Most of it has turned out to be crap, and the rest is music I'm going to have to sit with a while to decide whether it's mediocre or I'm just tired.
This, however, stood out immediately.
Song: "Ramesses Part I" Artist: Ramesses Album: Misanthropic Alchemy (2007)
It's taken me a while to get around to this one... If only I had a song blog to feed off to tell me these things so I'd know where to go in otherwise "been there done that" sort of genres.
Hopefully this song makes up for the cowbell in the previous one.
Song: "Boxes" Artist: ?Jester? Album: ?JeStER?® (2008)
This band sounds a little too indie-alternative rock to get away with any sort of stoner/heavy label... but this song alone might remind you of Boris on a lucid day. DFA1979 is another familiar kind of sound, here. I'm not sure about the band yet, but I definitely like the song.
Song: "Pravus" Artist: Meshuggah Album: ObZen (2008)
This song has been stuck in my head since a random listen two days ago. I haven't posted it yet. Wonder why not, it was a feature song in my life around my birthday.
This is one of those 'learn something about yourself' kind of songs. How much obnoxious vocals can you tolerate, can you keep simple rhythm, and can you figure out what the song's about without looking up the lyrics? Among other possibilities...
In any case: loud. heavy. aggressive. varied. interesting.
Song: "Grendel, Snowman" Artist: Fu Manchu Album: The Action Is Go (1997)
I was looking for something more cliche to the fact that I'm fucking sick of snow, but I landed here instead. Okay. That's fine. This was one of my first non-astral favorite Fu Manchu songs. It still works.
Un i denti fied.
Song: "Tweak" Artist: Felix da Housecat Album: Virgo Blaktro and the Movie Disco (2007)
The actual song part of this starts about a minute in. I've been listening to this song since the summer... having not really gone away despite my annoyance with repetitive/dance music since then. It must be good, then.
Also, I was reminded of this artist recently because I overheard some interesting characters talking about this guy on the bus. I thought I was the only one who'd heard of him within my realm of existence, but I guess not.
Song: "The Wretched" Artist: Nine Inch Nails Album: The Fragile (1999)
I recall listening to this album when I was 17, loving it as a whole, and at first gravitating towards pretty much every song but this one. Most of those songs wore thin after a time, and before long I found myself hanging out with this one a lot instead. I remember I even called myself, in a chatroom, "wretched existence", for a handful of days because I was getting really sick of people confusing my usual name with something to do with Nirvana but had yet to come up with a better name.
I think that's about the very time I came up with one of my 'famous' and longest lasting of names. I was talking to a guy named Jay and he, like always, made absolutely no fucking sense, and he referred to me as a "satanic elf" as a joke. It was nearing Christmas, so I suppose these things were on the mind. I thought it was genius. And thus I became... Satanic Elf. Can't fucking confuse that with Kurt Cobain's idiocy, you uncultured fucks.
For the record, if any of my old jerk friends from chat(ro) or that other place ever read this... HI. EMAIL PLEASE.
Obviously I connect this album to a time period... It works like that.
Anyhow, more recently, I saw this band live. This is the actual "song" song that stood out through the show. Crazy, but true.
Song: "The Reflecting God" Artist: Marilyn Manson Album: Antichrist Superstar (1996)
Merry Christmas!
For those that don't really get the humor located in this post: Lyrics!
Oh yeah, and this is one of the best songs in the history of ever.
Song: "Heart Shaped Box" Artist: Nirvana Album: In Utero (1993)
This is for my Canadian friends and stalkers. Don't spend it all in one place.
Song: "Rogue" Artist: Akimbo Album: Jersey Shores (2008)
And this is for everyone else.
Song: "Evil (is Going On)" Artist: Monster Magnet Album: Superjudge (1993)
YER A LONG WAY FROM HOME...
I uploaded some live recordings I'd found on a MM forum a while ago to Sludge Swamp today. Visit it. The second NYC one is really good.
The first above song starts at 3:40, for the record.
Also, it's a cover.
I worked on this way too long.

Here's your new year's song. Or mine, anyway, circa Y2K.

2001...
Song: "The Patient" Artist: Tool Album: Lateralus (2001)
2002...
If I think about it too much, I will still get teary upon listening to this song. Hence why I almost never listen to it.
"This, too, shall pass."
Song: "Gonna Leave You" Artist: Queens of the Stone Age Album: Songs for the Deaf (2002)

Song: "Crystal Skull" Artist: Mastodon Album: Blood Mountain (2006)
2007...
This song is one of a few that revived/refreshed present-day music for me and sent me on my current path. It is, naturally, a wonderful song. Internet-based listens are not doing this song justice, however, so get the album.
Song: "One Inch Man" Artist: Kyuss Album: ...And The Circus Leaves Town (1995)
I have Mars square Mars exact tomorrow.
Here's when Mars was in Cancer square my Mars (direct): Tomahawk - Flashback & Kyuss - Green Machine. (retrograde): Brant Bjork - Low Desert Punk & Placebo - Nancy Boy. (direct about midnight October 5th/6th 2007, I talked about Tool.)
And Libra (Mars conjunct my Mars): Black Cobra - Sombra de Bestia & Buffalo - Tormento.
Mars in Aries, coming in late April. Last time I had Mars opposite Mars, I found out that Monster Magnet's record was finished. I detect possible synchronicity coming up.
In the meantime... I like this video.
