October 2008 Archives
Song: "Favorite Sun" Artist: Tweak Bird Album: Reservations (2008) / Tweak Bird/Red Fang split (2008)
Lazy post #7850. Later I'll post Queens of the Stone Age, followed by the only Electric Wizard song post I haven't made, and finish up the day with some Black Sabbath. Tomorrow, the Beatles. You'll fucking like it, too.
I like to experience music as a whole when I am not nearly unconscious, as it makes for less awkward experiences when dealing with the actual human beings involved with said music, from the band members themselves to the drunken idiots I have found myself spacially or socially near at that moment. Unfortunately for my need to make sense and be present, extreme levels of mental and physical exhaustion always find themselves meeting up with synchronous sound appreciation. In short, it sucks. I'm not socially trained enough to deliver when I'm out of it.
That's what this song made me think. Irrelevant, like everything else I've said about songs here at Sounds, but nevertheless present.
Great ending to this song, here. After clock abuse from various pseudo-metal bands, it's nice that someone out there can take the general energy of said styles and shorten it but still be effective/affective.
Song: "Fuck That Shit" Artist: Combichrist Album: What The Fuck Is Wrong With You People? (2007)
Overdue.
I suppose it would be backwards to call it "nice", but nevertheless... Nice message going on, here.
Song: "That Kind of Man" Artist: The Heavy Album: Great Vengeance & Furious Fire (2007)
Here's something (sort of) new for you. This sounds like it came out of another decade, the usual one that the kiddies are obsessed with these days.
It also sounds like it belongs on the Grindhouse soundtrack.
Song: "Gonna Leave You" Artist: Queens of the Stone Age Album: Songs for the Deaf (2002)
Despite my sarcasm, I didn't lie.
Back when I first heard Queens of the Stone Age, I thought only moronic fuckers listened to QOTSA. And while this is true, and it does get in the way of band appreciation, it reflects the band itself not (well, maybe, I've only met them in dreams). Back when I wished QOTSA would die, when my sampling of their material was seriously limited, this is the only song that got in and stuck with me.
Why?
"Push it in, Break it off" and "You're out of my high chair, I'm out of your womb".
I'm almost certain that I started listening and hearing that second line when Saturn went into Cancer, even though there was a 9 month buffer between the file datestamp and that time (June 2003). Cancer has pretty much nothing going for it in the way of self-assertion short of reverting to infant models of expression: pointless crying and acting helpless to life/others. Saturn hit my chart when it went into Cancer, and boy did I feel like I was surrounded like a bunch of babies. No wonder the song stuck.
Also, this is irrelevant to my own experience then, but... ladies, no man is worth it. Use a motherfucking condom.
Song: "Eavesdropper" Artist: Hotel Wrecking City Traders Album: Black Yolk (2008)
I did some minor research yesterday and came up with this. You will like HWCT if you like stoner rock, basically. Right off I noticed Karma to Burn impersonations not merely for the fact that they're both instrumental bands, however Hotel has a heavier, more physically solid sound.
This song might not be the best places to start unless you're in the mood for a wavering, in-flux kind of sound... but it made a quick impression for me, and thus my sharing. Also check out the first track on this album, "Cup Weekend Murders".
Song: "Mississippi Queen" Artist: Mountain Album: Climbing! (1970)
This has been stuck in my head for a week, not including the day that I couldn't get some Melvins song out of my head, thanks to listening to it randomly apart of some research for the blog.
No thoughts... just, urgh. Go away.
Song: "Deerhead" Artist: Oaks Album: Bravo! (2008)
I went looking for this album months ago. I searched, and I searched some more, and I eventually gave up. The other day, randomly looking up the bands name once again thinking my search was hopeless as had been before, their album came up. GASP. Then I waited two days for it to download.
The extended wait was worth it.
You could argue that I could just have bought the album to begin with and heard this back in April or whenever it was, but I have been broke since. Soon, though, this will be mine. Make it yours, too.
Song: "It Is What It Is" Artist: Weedeater Album: God Luck and Good Speed (2007)
Oy vey. Today I directly remembered why I was listening to so much Superjudge circa 2007 - exorcising those demons. This particular brand of fuzzy heaviness will do for today, though.
Since I'm just going to repeat myself anyway, here are some songs that I've posted over time that, personally, bear repetition. If you've missed one, go back. Seriously.
Also, song entries include a link to every song I've posted by that artist. Just click on the artist's name link in the "labels", and it'll take you to a new page with all of the songs.
Electric Wizard - Dunwich
Gojira - The Heaviest Matter of the Universe
Dozer - Exoskeleton
Mastodon - Mother Puncher
Morphine - French Fries With Pepper
James LaBrie - Oblivious

Song: "Spasm" Artist: Peach Album: Giving Birth to a Stone (1994)
Watch the video.
If you've ridden the Tool train, you already know this song. If not, be assured that there are no half-naked bald midgets whining about his mommy in this song.
Was that MP3 really worth it? Get off your ass this weekend and support local music.

Song: "Soul Burn" Artist: Meshuggah Album: Destroy Erase Improve (1995)
This song sounds best in context, with the build-up from the previous song. You sort of have to have a reason or need to listen to it otherwise. People/situations who are irritating but won't go the fuck away are fair reason, I think.
Song: "The Becoming" Artist: Nine Inch Nails Album: The Downward Spiral (1994)
For as much time I've spent in life listening to Nine Inch Nails, I have not posted enough of their/his songs. They were one of the major bands that took me beyond shitty mass-fed music (I know that's ironic, you don't have to tell me) as a youngin' to where ever it is I am today.
I have referred to this song as many things, but a few things stand out. The squeaky noise. The yelling, crowd-like noise. The concept of one beating their machine. Or, wait, not "machine", but "mwa-sheen". It's apart of him, it's inside of him. Inside? You wish, man.
It is apparent that I look upon "The Becoming" with fondness. Unfortunately, after a good period of teen angst, a shitty relationship, or whatever it might be for you where you find yourself playing this album every day for months, this song (and album as a whole) has once-a-year listening potential at best. Assuming you're not 24 or 34 with the mindset of a 14 year old, this album has gotten old despite its greatness. Thank god, eh?
Song: "Wannabe in LA" Artist: Eagles of Death metal Album: Heart-On (2008)
California as a whole is gross despite its persona. But, this song is evil enough to share. Also? <3 Liam Lynch. If you have a computer that can handle videos/huge files, check out Liam's podcasts.
I'm wondering if this is going to be the last EODM song post for a while, or the first of several. Just a few more days to go til we find out.
Song: "Fuck You All" Artist: Scott Reeder Album: TunnelVision Brilliance (2006)
I suck at posting songs lately. I'm distracted, and beyond that nothing is really sinking in. It happens.
Not exactly, but I've been in the mindset similar to this song. Despite its overt title, it's a fairly quiet, depressing song.
Song: "Sharks" Artist: Red Fang Album: Red Fang (2008)
Tomorrow, Red Fang's full-length self titled LP comes out. If you don't buy it, you're an idiot. If you do, you're still an idiot, but at least, now, a cultured idiot.
That strained voice with the few clear lyrics will make you smile, if not laugh. There is also that jumpy beat which is great, and even greater when the song takes a dramatic turn halfway through. This song appeals to all mood states, as it's both fun and serious.
Also, apparently, this band is about their beer worship (go to page 2 of "My Photos").
Song: "She Pulled Machete" Artist: Black Elk Album: Always a Six, Never a Nine (2008)
And they are still slightly insane.
Get this song (and others) over at the front page of cruicial blast. The album comes out next week.
Song: "Sugar" Artist: She Wants Revenge Album: Save Your Soul EP (2008)
Being SWR, this song is very Depeche Mode-ish, this time in the vein of "Enjoy The Silence". It's good, in a familiar and safe way. Our local singer almost sounds like he's singing for once, too.
I'm not sure why I hadn't done this song yet. Oddly, this EP is better than their latest album - by leaps.
Song: "Hospital" Artist: Black Elk Album: Always a Six, Never a Nine (2008)
There was a show I was kind of thinking of going to today because of an opening band interest. I decided not to because the venue's hard to get home from and the place would be packed with moron-level death metal fans. Just as I was starting to feel crappy for my loss of opening band live experience, I found out that the headliner used impaled goat heads in their stage gimmick. That is, real, once alive goat heads, the kind that start to smell of rot after so much time post-death. ... That is fucking fucked up. I'm all for darker spectrum art in music, but that's fucking ridiculous. No way am I going to a show that smells of rotting goat head.
Almost needless to say, I'm reminded of Black Elk and their eaten-alive puppies. Singing about it is fine, thinking about it is okay, but the real thing? Not so much.
Song: "Anubia" Artist: Phased Album: Music For Gentlemen (2003)
It's really dumb that I'm a top listener at last.fm for this band. Fix this. This song is awesome.
Song: "Beneath" Artist: Black Cobra Album: Bestial (2006)
Finally, some post-Sunn emotional/physical relief. I haven't been listening to BC much in recent weeks, obviously because I have overdone it. But ah... Hearing this song today made me feel 100x better. Especially in knowledge that, in just minutes, "Omniscient" was coming up.
I'm pretty sure these guys have become my favorite band of the past year.
Edit: Video.
Song: "All Your Way" Artist: Morphine Album: Yes (1995)
No words. Just find the song. You know you can do it.
Song: "Breadfan" Artist: Budgie Album: Never Turn Your Back On A Friend (1973)
I was wondering where I'd heard Danava's sound before, and... oh yeah. Nurr.
Or, "nngh", if you're a fan of mice.
Two people on planet Earth got that joke. You're welcome for that image, too.
Sarcasm is for losers.
Artist: A Perfect Circle Album: Thirteenth Step (2003)
Oh, Thirteenth Step... How I love thee. And how I hate.
I recall, in a fuzzy sense, where I was when this album came out.
I'd had several years of shit - the last few years of high school were nightmarish, discovering that society did not want me to actually "be myself" at all. This was only compounded by the following few years out...
I met a boy and fell in the love as I found him reasonable and I suppose "beautiful"... only to watch him slowly crumble into a pathetic pile of drug-alcohol abuse and pretty lies. I let things play out instead of taking an active role in what was going on, because there's really just no point in trying to talk sense into an addict, and I couldn't do anything else. I understand misery, dissonance, being out of it socially, needing to escape, etc, regardless of my not understanding why anyone of otherwise sound intelligence would ever default into chemicals.
Mysteriously, a year and a half into things, he disappeared, leaving everything behind but someone to scream at.
Months of complete darkness passed. I then made changes. I attempted to put my head back on straight. This is not an easy task from one of these kinds of "situations", but I was coming into it unstable so I had.. a hard time. To say the very, very least.
A year passed from sudden disappearance, and I found myself with a new boy-man. A year is not enough. A year is nothing. It felt like forever, a whole world between one and the other moment, but still. I went forward, looking towards self-betterment. I had wasted so much time. It was time to deliver, to "participate". I did things. I looked forward, making goals. But after years of shit, the sad little goals I made were still too much. Things felt forced, contrived. Nothing would work. I felt like a failure. I had to go backwards. No, I had to go allllllll of the way back. I couldn't start up again from where I'd left off. I had to start from the motherfucking beginning. Everything had to die.
I recall the moments that I realized that my dreams for myself/my life during my school days died - in tandum with things around me dying, both literally and metaphorically. 2003, when Thirteenth Step came out, I was at the peak of these realizations, everything coming to head. Things were "heavy", everything I came in contact with maintained a sense of poisoned by association.
Watching things crumble and die in 2004 was... infuriating. But necessary. What fucking relief the following year was, this blank slate, like I was "reborn". Like nothing had ever happened. Not school, not the stupid boy(s), not anything... My body changed, my mind changed, my words changed. I was, for once and finally, young.
Nevermind these experiences, I find it interesting my connection with this album, and those who are aware of it. It hurts my mind to think there are people in the world with no real awareness of human extremes, who will go to any length to deny their possibilities or to pinpoint them in black & white technical terms in attempt to make themselves feel safe through separation. Life is not so simple. Your chemical silence and convenient denials will never save you from the truth.
Stay with me Safe and ignorant Just stay with me Hold you and protect you from the other ones The evil ones Don't love you son, Go back to sleep
Edit: That's what I get for writing these things late at night. I forgot to tell you to buy the album.
Song: "Once In A Lifetime" Artist: Talking Heads Album: Remain in Light (1980)
So how does it feel having been writing this blog for a year today?
Same as it ever was. Same as it ever was. Same as it ever was. Same as it ever was...
Song: "King of Mars" Artist: Monster Magnet Album: Dopes to Infinity (1995)
Someone explain this song to me. Assuming it comes with explanation and isn't wandering in lyrical mist forever. It seems sarcastic, but coming from a guy with Moon conjunct Pluto, it's hard to tell.
Song: "Cosmic Overdrive" Artist: Sheavy Album: Blue Sky Mind (1995)
Sheavy is awesome. If you have yet to hear them, please... change this.
This song is between the Melvins' "A History of Drunks" and Kyuss' "Tangy Zizzle" in my top-listened songs list, which says plenty enough about its worth.
Song: "Your Neighborhood Spaceman" Artist: Peeping Tom Album: Peeping Tom (2006)
Not really, but at least you tried.
After I got over the initial "moment" of this album, this song only fits certain moods for me. I recognize it as nice, but it really only seems to get through during quiet times when I've got nothing left to spend on heavier, louder, faster, or more complex songs.
I do still remember laughing seeing this song live, though. During the "time and space" lyrical parts, he paused to pose between lines, like he was waiting for a train for just an instant.
I think we've gone over the stupid shit I laugh at in this blog before... but I have one more.
Song: "Weed Monkey" Artist: Weedeater Album: God Luck and Good Speed (2007)
I saw these guys live a few months ago. I hadn't listened to most of their discography beforehand because I was feeling lazy, nevermind I wasn't attending the show for them.
They began this song partway through their setlist. I hadn't entirely heard it before, so I didn't know what was coming. The singer went to the mic and sung "I breathe", just like on album... but instead of like on album, he followed up that thought by breathing hard into the microphone, an audible "HAH".
For whatever reason, this was the funniest thing I'd heard in days. It's, like, okay? So? You breathe? Duh? Do we really need to be shown you do it? Me too?? Anyway, I was snickering to myself through the rest of the song. Who needs a demonstration on breathing?
This song is also heavy, hitting in the chest area ironically making it difficult to breathe. Halfway through the song changes in speed/style that most of you will really (really, really) enjoy.
Song: "Secret Plans" Artist: Eagles of Death metal Album: Heart-On (2008)
We individuals with a concentration of Libra should have no trouble getting into a band whose lead singer and lyricist is a Libra Sun conjunct Pluto conjunct Mercury, correct? After all, he speaks (Mercury) for a whole generation (Pluto) of pansexual, finger-in-every-pie morons (Libra). Plus he's got Jupiter square all of his Libra, so he's got a Mister Smiley persona which is a tough thing to resist even for more serious, intellectually rigid types. Definitely comes out in the music...
This album comes out in physical format in a few days, but you can already buy it via mp3... or, you know, download it free because you already bought the album and got sick of waiting when the album would probably not even arrive til the day of the show thanks to an apparent postal void between everywhere else and your city and that's too late to know. Yep.
Song: "Black Balloon" Artist: Monster Magnet Album: Superjudge (1993)
I had an interesting moment while writing yesterday's post for EoDM that made me need to cut all of my thoughts short because... what? What the hell?
I had been looking for Monster Magnet's Superjudge album for a while. I couldn't find it repeatedly, and then one day it was just there as if it had always been. Apparently, according to file datestamps and my vast need to write about unimportant shit, I downloaded and heard Superjudge for the first time the same day I downloaded and heard Eagles of Death metal for the first time.
What musical contrast... light happy rock versus fuzzy fuck-everyone metal. Strangely, these bands aren't that far apart, both topically being about sex drugs and rocknroll. And as far as I'm concerned, they're both genius.
I recall, at the time I saw EoDM for the first time live, I was talking to some poor boy about my love of Monster Magnet, and without any prior knowledge of the band he listened to, I believe, "Twin Earth" by random choice. Not a good place to start for someone who doesn't listen to metal or even proper rock (he'd never even heard Nirvana!) - he'll never listen to Monster Magnet again. Which might be a good thing... but all the same I sent him this instead for necessary post-"Twin Earth" contrast purposes.
If you're Magnet neutral or don't know where to begin with this band/album, "Black Balloon" here comes highly recommended. Pun subconsciously intended.
Song: "I Like It Both Ways" Artist: Supernaut Album: Supernaut (1976)
From the name you would expect a little Sabbath worship, and it's there... but this is apparently "glam rock". Very 70s. I heard this band for the first time this week, and they're confused with another band named Supernaut online, so I don't have much information besides that. Still, this song... is awesome.
Song: "Mother" Artist: Danzig Album: Danzig (1988)
Mutha. Tell yichildrin not to wok my waey.
I can't think of shit to post lately. Suggest a band?
Song: "Parabol(a)" Artist: Tool Album: Lateralus (2001)
I remember in those first few dozen times I heard these songs, the building open between "Parabol" and "Parabola" used to make my day.
Then I remember wanting to cringe because it reminded me of talking to a guy whose name started with P and ended with :(, because I told him it made my day. Didn't make my day too much shortly after that.
This song also reminds me of when I first played with CSS layers, as I was listening to Lateralus on repeat that day. And also because the text I used to play around with were "Parabola" lyrics. The colors in the design were red and yellow. I know, I know. Wrong song.
It's weird that memory sticks so heavily to songs. Or, at least, did.
Anyway, "Parabola"'s lyrics? They are the cheesecake of song dessert. Consume.
Song: "Ain't No Easy Way" Artist: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Album: Howl (2005)
Fuck this band. No idea why I hate them, I just do. Probably starts with the completely stereotypically inaccurate band name.
But they do have a few okay songs.
Song: "Groove Is In The Heart" Artist: Deee-Lite Album: World Clique (1990)
Before I forget about this one (again), this should have been in my mass videos entries months ago. Locally they played this song on video channels a lot for a little while, and then just stopped. I recall being disturbed by this. Where did they go?
Doing some really quick research, I discover this lady's a Leo. Wow, that was completely unsurprising.
Song: "What's Up?" Artist: 4 Non Blondes Album: Bigger Better Faster More (1992)
Another one!
Also check out the site. They have a lot of old videos. Even, gasp, Pop Up Video.
Song: "Prehistoric Dog" Artist: Red Fang Album: Red Fang (2008)
I can post this song again because I technically didn't do it in the first place. Yeah. Cuz what have I ever done, really? Life is a figment.....
Anyway, check out the video. It's got a "revenge of the nerds" thing going on that those of you who don't like beer will appreciate.
When you're done, buy the album at ATH because, omgz, it's there now.
Edit: I changed the video link. Apparently Pitchfork has never heard of redirects.
Song: "Big Sta" Artist: Oaks Album: Bravo! (2008)
You know what sucks? You're involved in astrology enough to know the Sun Signs mean almost nothing to the whole of a person, yet you encounter particular Sun Signs in a very stereotypical format, causing you to believe that all of a particular Sun Sign suck in a specific way. And though this is ultimately true for you personally, that you're never going to get along that well with particular signs, you find exceptions in people who have astrology that leans away from their Sun Sign. I mean, they do kind of suck in that way, but you can no longer say anything edgy or important about all of that Sun Sign. Well, you could, but then you'd be attacked by idiots. And you might hurt exceptions' feelings.
Not that I've ever been in the feel good business. Too much effort, not enough truth.
So that was my thought when Oaks - "Big Sta" came on today. You should go find it, listen to it, transcribe its lyrics, and send them to me so I can see how well this entry doesn't connect in any way to the song.
Song: "Possum Kingdom" Artist: Toadies Album: Rubberneck (1994)
Not sure why other than that they were both radio played at the same time, but this song reminds me of Folk Implosion's "Natural One".
This song's lyrics reminds me of the movie Teeth. If you have not seen Teeth, see it. Do not watch it with assorted company.
This song also reminds me of fall/October, particularly Halloween, particularly ten Halloweens ago. But that's a story for another song.
Song: "Children of Doom" Artist: Saint Vitus Album: C.O.D. (1992)
To complete my pattern of lame holiday songs...
This song is rather low.
