Song: "Kick You Right Back"
Artist: The Satellite Circle
Album: Way Beyond The Portal Of The Bone White Rubber Sun (2000)

This band has a stoner rock style of sound with more emphasis on the rock. Nice vocals, bassy, with a touch of psychedelics. Dozer fans will likely love this.

Song: "Below The Cusp"
Artist: Black Cobra
Album: Feather and Stone (2007)

Just, holy shit. I've been listening to this for hours, when it's only a 25 minute record. Definite worthwhile purchase.

Song: "Control Freaq"
Artist: Felix da Housecat
Album: Kittenz and Thee Glitz (2001)

This is a very simple, repetitive house song. As long as you aren't deaf like I've been this week, the heavy sound of the song once it gets going is pretty powerful and fairly addictive.

Song: "Superjudge"
Artist: Monster Magnet
Album: Superjudge (1993)

Wow, that song sample is terrible. Download it.

I've had this song stuck in my head, yet again, for the last few days. I don't know what did it. Maybe someone said something that sort of sounded like lyrics here - that happens a lot. Maybe I just read the word "superjudge" somewhere. It's hard to avoid when I relate. Literally, I'm quite sure this song is beyond my sphere of existence, as well as most others'... but... We really are all damned. The imagery and intensity of emotion going on here is... just, amazing. There's a sincerity in this song well beyond that of most. Think Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt", but an entirely different subject and way heavier.

I recall that it took me a couple of months of casual, random listening of this album to really hear it, and this was one of the more difficult songs for me. But once that sound started to unfold, each song was like an amazing gift. You could probably analyze this song all day, so perhaps it's more like a never-ending supply of gifts. In any case, if you don't feel exhausted after this song is over, you're doing something wrong.

Fuck what the media says: this is one of the greatest albums ever.

Song: "Pretty Like Drugs"
Artist: Queen Adreena
Album: Drink Me (2002)

I had a dream last night that I found myself singing a bit like this. My voice is deeper and more commanding than this so I was being, uh, funny. To say the least.

Because the video's sound sucks, here's a sample of the track.

And yes, you are at the mercy of my dreams now.

Song: "Vodka King"
Artist: Enojado
Album: Heavy Tools EP (200?/2008)

This is an incredibly friendly, quick and easy to like stoner rock song. You will like this if you like heavy, bassy rock and roll. Period.

Song: "Radiance of Shadows"
Artist: Nadja
Album: Radiance of Shadows (2007)

I heard "Radiance of Shadows" for the first time recently, and was giggling most of that time. This is a serious, atmospheric song, but the direct contrast in how the song builds and what happens elsewhere in the song comes across as creepy and therefore hilarious. Clearly I have a fucked up sense of humor if I can find this dark and practically wordless track funny, so don't take my word on this. Give the first 5-8 minutes a listen instead.

Song: "Human Fly"
Artist: The Cramps
Album: several, check their discography.

All I have to say is that you should hear this song at least once in your life.

Song: "New Rose"
Artist: The Damned
Album: Damned Damned Damned (1977)

This is happy music... and also among the songs you need to hear at least once in your life.

Song: "N.W.O."
Artist: Ministry
Album: Psalm 69 (1992)

Also a means of creating new masses of sheep. Naturally I'm referring to this song, not politics. It's always fun when the sheep get together to display their sheep-like attributes in the name of not being a sheep. You gotta love that quality about bands like this.

Great song, though.

Song: "Wargasm"
Artist: L7
Album: Bricks Are Heavy (1992)

This was the first song I knowingly heard by this band, and I hope that for some of you it is also yours. When you're done listening, buy their album The Beauty Process because every song on it is gold.

The singer of this band, Donita Sparks, currently has a solo project, which just released an album entitled Transmiticate. I haven't heard it yet, but don't expect the same universal heaviness with it as with L7.

Song: "Ancient Delay/Black Vomit" (two songs)
Artist: Wolf Eyes
Album: Burned Mind (2004)

I downloaded this about a week ago from sludge swamp, but I've been behind on my music sampling and haven't been caring much. However, I just heard this and felt it necessary to post.

This is a difficult to describe band and album. Wolf Eyes are musically close to doom/drone, but taking a clusterfuck "noise" approach. It almost sounds like a horror movie soundtrack (real horror, not tiring pop-psychology horror). It's ... dark. These guys sound like they might possibly be out of their minds.

These two songs remind me of driving under high voltage power lines in the desert in the middle of the night, and of a particular Bill Hicks quote: "I feel like a UFO. 'Cause just like UFOs, I, too, am appearing in obscure southern towns in front of handfuls of hillbillies. And just like UFOs, these hillbillies find me equally incomprehensible."

Song: "Good Deeds"
Artist: Adult.
Album: Why Bother? (2007)

If the player doesn't work, scroll down to the third video (from fabchannel) on the left side of their myspace profile.

Interesting little hyper electronic song, here. Familiar to Le Tigre and a hundred other electronic bands with a darker style.

Edit: Embedded video more! Here's the link. It's in the concert video player.

Song: "Untamed Chicken"
Artist: Tu
Album: Tu (2002?)

This song has a bit of a slow start due to the fact that it's the first song on its album, but do not be deterred. This is ear candy. I'm offended that the rock portion of the song is so short (2 minutes, 20-something seconds), so repeat listens are necessary.

I dare you to try dancing to this band without getting confused. The whole album is available to listen to on last.fm, so get to it.

Categories:

Song: "Freak"
Artist: Silverchair
Album: Freak Show (1997)

You've probably heard this. In case you were in a coma or in jail in 1997, this band is pseudo-famous due to the fact that the singer begun this band as a toddler, and therefore all of their songs revolve around infantile expression sometimes referred to as "teen angst". This song displays that very well. Unlike similar bands of the time and disposable copy-cats of the future, it's a more time-tested kind of song.

Song: "I Got A Feelin (Just Nineteen)" (two links)
Artist: Eagles of Death metal
Album: Death By Sexy (2006)

The random function mocks me. This one came on directly after the previous.

I was hanging out with a bunch of nineteen year olds when this song came out, so I got an extra special bit of humor out of this.

I'd like to warn you, but judgment does this song in.

Looks like this band may be releasing a new album soon-ish...

Song: "Soul of Fire"
Artist: Witch
Album: Witch (2006)

You will like this song if you like Black Sabbath and familiar 70s metal. Think along the lines of "Symptom of the Universe", although obviously not the same. Good song, very energetic while still staying within the lines of stoner rock.

I need a "watch for clones" street sign for my site.

Categories:

Song: "Suicide"
Artist: Red Fang
Album: Tour EP (2007)

Another Red Fang post. This one's a little bit different than the other two. It's more relaxed, more subdued than catchy. And apparently it's a cover. Naturally, I can find neither song in the usual places online, so both of these are things you'll need to download.

Song: "El Equis"
Artist: Black Cobra
Album: Bestial (2006)

Excuse me while I have a "fuck it" moment.

I may or may not be in love with this song. I also may or may not know why this could possibly be. Who could have this much rage and still exist? I mean... the lyrics? Are those even lyrics? Is "BLEYH!" a word? but yeah, it's just this constant I AM GOING TO KILL MY GOLDFISH WHEN I GET HOME FROM WORK TODAY! PAIN AND TORTURE! RARGH!

And yet... it is good.

Anyway, the video doesn't do the song much justice. The subtle shifts in the song are important, which the video's sound doesn't pick up at all.

Excellent video, in two parts, almost working as a substitution for the on-album song.

Song: "Bleed"
Artist: Meshuggah
Album: ObZen (2008)

As for the song link, if you look at the very bottom of the screen, there's a player that plays the whole song. The quality is better than myspace, where it's also available to hear.

I'm surprised that I like this (still). You may, too.

Edit #1: Also, I think I may <3 this song as much as "El Equis".

Edit #2: Methinks this song is going to win song of the year.

Song: "Hold On"
Artist: Hot Chip
Album: Made in the Dark (2008)

Completely in contrast to the song posted before it (...and not even a tenth as good, FYI), "Hold On" is a simple little dance-pop-electronic song. Non-epic lyrics, clean vocals, easy listen. Though I don't care for some of the concepts here, the chorus part is pretty nice.

As for the link, there's some odd added crap in the beginning for a few seconds. It's not part of the song.

Song: "The Law"
Artist: Kyuss
Album: Wretch (1991)

I'm going to tell you right now: this album is a MUST OWN.

If you've never heard this, or anything like this before, you will initially be surprised at the overall tone of the album seeming to jump right out of late 80s/early 90s metal. Naturally, because it does. However, it's a "classic", so you will come back to it despite your feelings on that era of metal.

"The Law" begins with guitar. This is an understatement. Over one minute of amazing guitar. And it doesn't end there, no, as lyrics do not begin until 1:50. You may need to pause right at "darkness..." and start over again to make sure that first minute was for real.

The rest of the song is a disappointment in comparison, but it is still full of the awesome that you neglect if you have no Wretch in your life. Change this.

Song: "Discipline"
Artist: Nine Inch Nails
Album: ? (2008?)

I was listening to "Into The Void" by Black Sabbath tonight, and it occurred to me that I hadn't listened to the other "Into The Void" in a while. On impulse, and despite seeing another "two weeks..." message on the site just a day ago, I checked nin.com.

Two minutes later... I have a new Nine Inch Nails song. Embedded into the song's ID tags is a little message that apparently something is happening May 5th.

Nine Inch Nails has become a formerly fat friend who's suddenly lost a lot of weight.

Categories:

Song: "Sea of Spears"
Artist: The Sword
Album: The Sword/Witchcraft Split (2007)

Great track. It's just the right amount of metal and catchy, rolling stoner feeling that makes bands like this "names" in music. Those of you who appreciate Led Zeppelin will also enjoy the other The Sword track on this album, "Immigrant Song".

Categories:

Song: "The Smiling Cobra"
Artist: (the) Melvins
Album: Nude With boots (2008)

While I'm overall more interested in the previous album's sound and style, this song... is something. If you care, you can find the album online already by doing a simple google-torrent-blog download search.

Edit: Added a link, finally.

Categories:

Song: "Indomitable Wall"
Artist: Stinking Lizaveta
Album: Scream of the Iron Iconoclast (2007)

Nice song. Their "related" artists according to listening habits are: Om, Electric Wizard, High on Fire, Ufommamut, Weedeater, Big Business, and Sleep. Not to put down any of these artists, but Stinking Lizaveta has a more 'full', comprehensive sound than these artists would suggest. They're kind of a doom-stoner-ish progressive metal as a whole, but they're also familiar to various prog and post-whatever acts out there. They're instrumental, so if you're annoyed with metal bands whose vocals are screamed but nevertheless enjoy the music, this may be what you've been looking for.

Song: "Red Glow"
Artist: Astrosoniq
Album: Speeder People (2006)

And now for some friendly stoner rock. This particular song is familiar to Monster Magnet-Hawkwind for obvious reasons. Overall, this album (band?) leans towards a low, depressing sort of sound, which is apparent from this song.

Song: "Middle Man"
Artist: The Atomic Bitchwax
Album: 0004 (2008)

TAB & company have obviously been paying attention to the changing music business, as they released their newest album online earlier this month, including multi-tracks if you so chose to tear apart their music. The physical album comes out in June.

Is anyone else reminded of older Stone Temple Pilots meets Queens of the Stone Age with this song?

Song: "In The Night"
Artist: Floating Goat
Album: Heaven's Burning (2002)

After this streak I won't have anything to post tomorrow. Oh well.

Great lyrical movement going on here. The song itself is pretty nice as well, although it's at least a bit more listener-friendly than the rest of this album.

Song: "My Lil"
Artist: Black Elk
Album: Black Elk (2006)

I've been to quite a few live shows where the sound people have trouble accurately representing the main microphone in comparison to the rest of the instruments on stage. For bands whose lyrics or vocals are important to the overall sound of a song, this is extremely irritating.

This band, however, might benefit from muddled vocals. The music is pretty good, but... those vocals. Jesus, man. Take a breath.

This particular song is an extreme example of someone with built up tension. Those of you who don't find any humor in other people's angst will prefer "Who Knew", also available to listen at the link above.

Update: I finally saw this band live and, of course, the main vocals were muddled. I learned that I had grown to love those crazy vocals. PAAAAH!

Song: "Toss You To The Wolves"
Artist: Black Elk
Album: Black Elk (2006)

"Toss You To The Wolves" is the song directly after "My Lil" on its album. I've never done this before... posted two songs from the same artist in the same day. So excuse me if this irritates your need for random.

What can I say about it, other than the vocals are, in short, memorable. The title of the song is a major lyric in the beginning of the track, and it is put in such a way that will make the darkly humorous part of you, assuming you have a dark side, smile with utter glee.

Somehow the worst singing ability ever makes this track really work.

Song: "Don't Talk To Me"
Artist: GG Allin & The Jabbers
Album: Always Was, Is And Always Shall Be (1980)

Someone told me I should listen to GG Allin. I wrote it down but I kept forgetting to do something about this. I finally got some stuff recently, and it's almost in direct contrast to what I've been interested in lately. Nevertheless, it was on my mind...

Then I heard this song. Written sometime just before my birth, it aptly describes my life.

Also, for the astrolo-geekin', I think it's funny that this guy has a Gemini Moon. Square Jupiter, even. Fucking amazing. People only hate what they are.

Song: "Blue Snow"
Artist: Orange Goblin
Album: Time-Travelling Blues (1998)

This song's lyrics remind me of a time that someone was talking about having sex after eating ham. It hadn't happened - it was the plan.

You're welcome.

Categories:

Song: "July"
Artist: Slo Burn
Album: Amusing the Amazing (1996)

Slo Burn is [was :(] "amazing" by default due to their singer being John Garcia of Kyuss. The music is in the same vein as Kyuss, although with a stronger overall bass and apparently more centered intention.

If you're new to Slo Burn, you're missing out. Here's a good place to start.

Categories:

Song: "Bender"
Artist: Sevendust
Album: Home (1999)

This is one of the songs (and artist, not including the inclusion of Chino from Deftones) that helped me transition out of standard commercial rock and to discover that I preferred a heavy overall sound.

In most moods, this song does not really appeal. But if you've got angst, it works. If you don't have much angst but you do have a working sense of humor, I challenge you to figure out the lyrics to this song without looking them up.

"sweet and tangy alive, only do i spit..."

Song: "Mentor"/"Erase"
Artist: Torche
Album: Torche (2005)

Torche is playing next to Boris for a states tour this summer, and is currently on tour with The Sword and Stinking Lizaveta. I had one Torche album at the time I found out about the Boris tour, but I hadn't given it a proper chance yet, so I went to do proper research.

This is a pretty solid album in sound/feeling. I'm liking the first track's lyrics and overall style, but "Mentor" is very catchy. It's a heavy song overall, but the vocals make it seem lighter somehow.

The next track, "Erase" is a must-hear. It is musically very similar to "Mentor", but has an element of uplifting dreaminess to it.

This is not traditional doom/stoner, where one needs to have a default state of mind in order to 'get' what's going on. Despite their musical heaviness, this album is very accessible and "light" in feeling - closer to pop-rock than metal. There's a line in the first track - "war is beautiful" - that sums up their sound very well.

Song: "Porcelain Heart"
Artist: Opeth
Album: Watershed (2008)

I was pushed in the way of Opeth before, and I'm aware of their popularity in general by metal geeks alike, but I have the apathy in addition to the narcissism. I cannot be pushed or expected of. These things have to happen on their own time.

I downloaded Watershed a few days ago, and the single "Porcelain Heart" stood out immediately. It makes even more sense now why they are/will be touring with Dream Theater - the musical similarities are clear. Opeth "dabbles" in death metal, which is not something I enjoy as a whole, but this song is anything besides death metal.

Good, worthwhile song. I'm even liking the singing. You will, too.

June 2nd is a Monday....

Song: "Station"
Artist: Russian Circles
Album: Station (2008)

Russian Circles' material is mostly gentle and atmospheric, but this particular track "rocks". I mean that in a loving way as well as the fact that it has a clear rock n' roll beat. (Maybe alt-metal is a better way to put it..?)

Oh yeah, and it's only their best song I've heard to date. Whether you're a fan of emotional rock or complex metal, you're sure to like this.

This album comes out May 6th. Presently you can pre-order Station from Insound and have Insound donate to this band for touring, if you're so inclined.
