Song: "Iron Swan"
Artist: The Sword
Album: Age of Winters (2006)

This song has infected my brain since I last saw them. Time to post it, eh?

Wildly assuming you've yet to hear or get to know this song: precious wittle fwuffy bunny intro meets an almost thrash metal drop off point + typical stoner mood-swings galore. The first vocals aren't found until two minutes in, which is an asset. There is variety, which you all know I love because I have the aesthetic ADD. Listen.

The Sun enters Cancer today... In other words, today's the first day of summer. For all the talk of global warming in the last few years, you wouldn't know it otherwise this year. Here are some songs that embrace cold and darkness AKA reality.

Song: "Winter's Wolves"
Artist: The Sword
Album: Age of Winters (2005)

Not necessarily the best place to start with this band, but still an alright, clone-y song... and it has the theme down right in the title.

Song: "Funeralopolis"
Artist: Electric Wizard
Album: Dopethrone (2000)

Give me some credit; I just did "The Sun Has Turned to Black". But this song is still on topic, and amazing... It needs to be shaken and excitedly berated with an "EE!". I wear headphones and I can still feel the bass in my lungs. Fucking brilliant.

Song: "Great Big White World"
Artist: Marilyn Manson
Album: Mechanical Animals (1998)

"Nothing heals, nothing grows..."

Song: "Eraser"
Artist: Nine Inch Nails
Album: The Downward Spiral (1994)

I'm thinking most of my posts are "cold and dark" at this point...

Song: "4th of July"
Artist: Soundgarden
Album: Superunknown (1994)

Why not; it's coming up.

Song: "Only Happy When It Rains"
Artist: Garbage
Album: Garbage (1995)

Because it all can't be heavy rock and metal around here.

Song: "Power of Darkness"
Artist: Danzig
Album: Blackacidevil (1996)

Danzig's discography fits under this post's theme.

Song: "Burn My Shadow"
Artist: Unkle
Album: War Stories (2007)

Lastly, for transition purposes...

Song: "Sea of Spears"
Artist: The Sword
Album: The Sword/Witchcraft Split (2007)

Great track. It's just the right amount of metal and catchy, rolling stoner feeling that makes bands like this "names" in music. Those of you who appreciate Led Zeppelin will also enjoy the other The Sword track on this album, "Immigrant Song".

YAY! Just... YAY! If you don't have this, get this.

If you do, congratulations on your insight.

Song: "Freya"
Artist: The Sword
Album: Age of Winters (2006)

Apparently this song is more popular than I thought. Since I rarely play video games anymore, I did not know this song was a track on Guitar Hero II. I suppose to make myself feel somewhat better about my ignorance, I discovered the band before the game came out. Lucky me...

In any case, this song is better than the video game would suggest. You will like it if you're a fan of any classic form of metal, with a leaning towards stoner metal. The vocals aren't the usual amount of screaming this genre entails, but they are nevertheless muddled and second to the music. I'm going to have to agree with last.fm saying that this band is closely related to Saviours, although it's more likely that you'll have heard The Sword before Saviours.

In any case, story time!

Occasionally, I find interesting social situations for knowing things I'm not supposed to know because I'm "just a girl" or "seem too young". A few months after discovering this band, I went music-shopping to cater to my physical music collection which had been lacking (especially in comparison to how much I download). I took several albums under the overall genre of metal up to the counter, and though it was nothing too extreme, this inspired conversation with the cashier.

He asked me if I had heard the new Queens material yet. The two singles had just been released into the internet wilds two days beforehand so I wasn't 100% clear on the song names, but I had heard them.

Then he asked me if I had ever heard Witchcraft. Yeah, I said. I think they were here a few months ago, and I recall they had to re-schedule. His reaction to this was a silent "OMGZ!" He told me how much he liked seeing them.

He finished scanning the CDs, and apparently deciding he needed to sell me something, he asked me about The Sword. Heard them, too! I smiled.

I thought it was funny. Nothing like an educated consumer...

Another bulk post while we get acquainted, mm? I loaded up mostly new-to-me songs in Winamp early this week, and hoped for the best. All of these were found online, so if you want to hear a song or more from the band, just do a search.

Song: "Combustion"
Artist: Meshuggah
Album: obZen (2008)

This album comes out March 7th, so I don't have a link for the song yet. You can find it online if you're so inclined. This band is touring with Ministry in March-April, and it didn't occur to me how they were linked bands until I heard this song. Listening to it a few times, I'd say that if you've heard Meshuggah and found them boring, you will like this song. However, if you are a Meshuggah fan, chances are pretty good that you'll find this song a bit too simple.

Song: "Fire Lances Of The Ancient Hyperzephyrians"
Artist: The Sword
Album: Gods Of The Earth (2008)

This is the first single for their new album, due out April 1st, preceded by this particular song as a its first single. As with Meshuggah, I don't have a link to post yet, but you can find a 20 second clip on their myspace. It's a pretty standard The Sword track, although perhaps more hyper than what can be found on their 2006 album Age of Winters. Good stuff, here.

Song: "Locust Star"
Artist: Neurosis
Album: Through Silver In Blood (1996)

This band is familiar to Isis in their ambiance, except probably more suited to those coming from a heavy rock/metal background. I'm not sure what to say about them besides that, other than that I don't know how I missed hearing these guys until recently. This song, however, is very good.

Hear/See it here:

Song: "You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side" (fan video)
Artist: Morrissey
Album: Your Arsenal (1992)

Another artist I missed due to ignorance. Morrissey was originally the singer for the Smiths before starting his own project in the late 80s. This has a bouncy rockabilly, alternative rock feel that most of you should be able to appreciate.

Song: "Prehistoric Dog"
Artist: Red Fang
Album: Tour EP (2007)

If you like stoner rock with leanings towards heavy, grunge-y rock, you will like this. This band has a Melvins feel to them. If you live in the Western half of the US, you should be able to catch these guys on tour in March. Also check out "Reverse Thunder" on their myspace (linked).

Song: "Down In Mexico"
Artist: The Coasters
Album: Death Proof OST (2007)

If you like oldies or you've seen the movie Death Proof, you're already familiar with this song. Brilliant simplicity.

Song: "Bikini"
Artist: El Gordo
Album: The Man Behind The Machine (2007)

Apparently the fat man doesn't walk alone after all. There's a very Kyuss-y feel going on here. These guys are obvious fans of Dozer, too. I think it's unfair that there are so many good stoner rock bands, or bands in general, that are overseas, out of my reach.
